The Vox Repeat percussion is a tremelo (AM) that is driven with a LFO that has a shape that is similar to the dynamic response of a struck sting. So FAST Attack and SLOW Decay AKA Ramp/ SAW wave form.
You could EASILY recreate this effect, and tailor the sound to your heart's desire, with a 2 stages of an envelope (AD or AR), an LFO and a VCA.
The LFO triggers the Envelope which opens and close the VCA. Adjust the Attack and Decay (Release) on the Envelope Generator you should be able to get the exact response you are hearing on those awesome Spacemen 3 albums.
LFO Square-->Envelope Gate IN-->Envelope OUT--> VCA CV IN__Signal to VCA
I think the repeat percssion resets the LFO when the player strikes a string. To achieve that you woul need an LFO with reset (some times called sync or gate) and a comparator (to extract the gate from the incoming signal). Apply the gater to the reset on the LFO and you have it!
The beauty of a modlar synth is that you have the power to creat MANY effects and sounds. All the basic tools are there...
I was going to respond to your thread regarding evolving CV generators with a similar suggestion... use what you already have. Mch chaos and randomness may be had by
MODLATING THE MODLATION

i found a schematic...breadboarded it and its just what i was looking for. it has a nice dirty sound to it which might work great for a gtr fx. but it is not so good on synth. you cant hear it as much.
here's the link:
http://analogguru.an.ohost.de/193/schematics/Vox_RepeatPercussion.gif
as soon as i have an lfo with sync and a good eg and a good vca, i will try what you recommended. although i dont quite get the comparator part. would i have to build a comparator module?
thanks for that idea
but as far as the self evolving thing...i was asking because at this point, "what i have" is not much. other than 1 vco and 1 filter and a few weird noise things i built, i dont really have much to modulate the modulator with. so i was looking for the next thing to build that might be really crazy. but i think i just need to keep building and building till i get enough stuff to do what you recommend. _________________ -------------------------------------------- check out various dan music at: http://www.myspace.com/lossnyc

How the hell did you read that schematic! Looks as though it were taken with a spy camera at some wierd angle!
Not trying to give you a hard time on the evolving CV thing.... having a device for specifically for chaos/ random/ evolving CV can be very nice. I guess I go to the Wogglebug all the time.
On that tip, I think the Wogglebug is a really great random voltage source, and I would def. recommend the board they are selling here. It is good quality.

| Try saving a copy to your hard drive and open it localy. Sometimes I get the same result viewing GIF's with explorer. |

I've never heard it, but this module might be very interesting for repeat effects:
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/burst_generator.html
Another sick (and noisy) repeat percussion guitar effect is the Walco Sound-Go-Round:

About the Analogguru gifs, they look O.K. in my browser (Safari) and in Photoshop, but really get odd in Preview. Something about non-symmetrical pixels or something. |

THat sound go round circuit is dirty looking...
An LFO driving a transistor switch shorting the signal to ground! Lo-Tech, I luv it.

if you just want a bunch of quick lfos you can fit a bunch of these on some strip board cheap and fast.
http://www.interq.or.jp/japan/se-inoue/e_ckt16.htm
add in caps for lower rates. replace R1 with maybe a 20k pot for rate control. shape may not be perfect but it doesn't get any simpler
i have the original repeat procession too and its cool but pretty limited. it just has a speed control. obviously you can mod it but why mess with a good thing. a bit OT but i’ve heard tail of people trying to recreate it with those layouts and they never sound right. nobody can figure out exactly whats happening in there. i think one of the trannies are scratched off or unobtainium or something i forget.
anyway yeah just build a bunch of cheap lfos, a few dirty vca's, maybe a few mults, a mixer, and you will have way more fun

also, check out the E.H. Pulsar tremolo. i believe it's similar to what you're looking for.

There is a Linear VCO in the National Data Sheet for the LM358 that has the same part count but offers voltage control. Check into that as VCLFO is very useful.

yeah but the one i know in there is a larger parts count, though not bad at all. i've used a modified version of it a few times. limited range but still very cool.

I'm often wanting a reset/gate on my LFOs for various reasons, but I have MFOS VCLFOs and there is no sync.
Is it possible to mod any oscillator for sync? I would really like to mod my LFOs:
