Physically there's only room for a second tape head as far as i know... so possily yes...
But with tape decks it's more tricky and complicated as with a reel to reel machine, which i would prefer...
For myself i didn't maged it to get longer tape loops as the usual 4 second ones when the tape is one round around...
There are ways to get it more lengthy but that didn't worked for me... also sometimes the tape transport with the easy loop didn't worked correctly...
but the machine itself is a simply delay when you record the same sound four times on it... usually there's some little timing difference which result in an echo like sound effect...
edit: just had a look over at youtube i saw this one which sounds and seems to be nice...

If you ask me i wouldn't mod or destroy the 4-track recorder and instead would use something lesser rated like walkmans or another cheap tape deck...
When trying to build a tape delay i would recommend more to mod a simple reel to reel machine or as i saw on youtube someone took all the parts out of a deck and build at tape delay using two cassette drives...
Maybe some walkmans one of them with a record funtion would be easier... break the front off, cut the sides away so that the tape can be wind from an to another, maybe take out the transport rolls on those that simply playback and then simply use the outputs of each walkmann and feed them into a mixer via attentuators... maybe the first one cann be modded with a pot to vary the speed of the motor... that's what comes to my mind, when i think a bt about it... on the positive side you could also use it as a tape loop machine with variable loop length by simply winding the tape over a variable axis... _________________ https://soundcloud.com/bastian-j |

Just a thought. But I have Ben playing with an idea using an old 5 inch floppy disk for a tape delay. Seems like it would be much easier to build.
Just an idea. I have not gone far enough with it to know if it's a good one or a bad one yet. |

yeah man its that marantz unit i want to make one from (adjustable tape speed and other nice controls) but there a wee bit pricey on ebay at the moment. i just happen to have that yamaha unit. i do have an old reel to reel though that i might defile to make one.
or i could just use my copicat ! |
