as i wrote i was also surprise, anyway to be more precise the leds have more realistic response between
100ohm and 100kohm depending on the audio source, it work for me with 100ohm.
I use a compressor in order to have always quite the same peaks on both input. I have the following settings:
For the MIC IN: threshold -20db | attack 40ms | release 1s | ratio 6:1
INSTRUMENT IN: threshold -5db | attack 5ms | release 1s | ratio 4:1
For the gain adjustment i recommend to use a multi-meter and be sure that
no more then 0.7volt are going in to the Vocoder, like this there are distortions or other artifacts
and also the 2 source are mixed in balance.
Settings vary always depending on the gear and setup used but there are some good starting compression
setting and from them is more easy to reach the adjustment that meets your need.
for simple audio signals
SOLO VOICE: threshold -20db | attack 30ms | release 350ms | ratio 2.5:1
ACOUSTIC GUITAR: threshold -10db | attack 5ms | release 240ms | ratio 2.5:1
E GUITAR: threshold -8db | attack 5ms | release 260ms | ratio 3.5:1
FINGER BASS: threshold -12db | attack 15ms | release 470ms | ratio 2:1
SLAP BASS: threshold -12db | attack 6ms | release 140ms | ratio 1.7:1
BRASS: threshold -18db | attack 15ms | release 220ms | ratio 1.7:1
STRINGS: threshold -15db | attack 70ms | release 1s | ratio 2:1
SYNTH BASS: threshold -10db | attack 8ms | release 250ms | ratio 3.5:1
for complex audio signals
FULL COMP: threshold -10db | attack 70ms | release 1.5s | ratio 3:1
NEAR LIMIT: threshold -18db | attack 10ms | release 200ms | ratio 6:1
HARD LIMIT: threshold -5db | attack 1ms | release 300ms | ratio 10:1
hope this can help |

I'm currently working on the ETI vocoder (mentioned earlier in this thread) and plan to add a compressor (or rather a limiter) to the input circuitry. It sounds like you have an external compressor connected to your vocoder, but would there be any disadvantages to including it with the input amps, permanently turned on? |

Here's a different one. http://www.vocoder.eu/
This is a respin of the Elektor Vocoder....
The PCBs are well made, an enclosure is included (if you wish), and it's a straightforward build... until you get to the calibration.
The calibration instructions were reworked a couple months ago, but I haven't taken time to dig it back out and finish it up.
It looks smashing though. |

Wow! That's very impressive to make it so compact. |

After struggling with it for months, I decided to just leave out the whole i/o board, without it the vocoder vocoder quite well, and most of the extra functionality of the i/o-board isn’t really necessary for my purposes.
This way, it fits quite well on 3 pieces of 100x160mm veroboard. |

And I'm going to do that |

Another option |
 |
|
For a quick vocoder option, there's always the Korg NTS-1 with adding the vocoder effect from here: https://dotec-audio.com/nts1.html
US$99 for the Korg and $10 for the software isn't too bad.
Now would I call it DIY? Ehhh!? You do have to assemble the NTS-1 and upload the software, so yeah, I think it (barely) qualifies!
One tip: turn off both the delay and reverb or the effect doesn't work well. _________________ Synth DIY since 1977! |

If you are interested in building the ETI Vocoder, I made PCBs like the original
I offer a kit made up of 14 cards, you can contact me by PM if you want one
More information here
https://www.modwiggler.com/forum/topic-278468.html
Like the original
1 Analysis/ Synthesis Board ( the big PCB originally in 2 parts)
1 Internal Excitation Board
2 Input Amplifier Board
2 Led PPM display Board
1 Slew Rate Control
1 Output Amplifier
1 Power Supply Board
1 Test Oscillator Board (Red PCB)
in addition to the original PCBs
2 PCB for jack mounting (for input section Mic/external excitation)
1 Dual Transformer Board
1 Safety cover for Transformer PCB.
