A lengthy stream of very positive and excited expletives comes to mind.

... with only the reservation that it seems designed for grid/loop oriented music.

That reminds me, I need to follow up on a promise to some friends to record an improvisation on Electroplankton, the software invented by Toshio Iwai, who is also the inventor of Tenori-On.

Does it have MIDI in and out? I can't seem to find too much info on the specs. It seems they are keeping everything hush-hush until it's unveiling.

I´m pretty sure it has midi connectivity. The sound engine is of the MOTIF family.

Check out the Monome. All the lights, none of the crap.

Supports MIDI and OSC, it's Open &Free down to the hardware (ok, the physical hardware costs money, obviously)

No midi out on the menome. It has to go into a computer via USB. Neat device. However, there are lots of sofware applications people have developed for it. It would be great with Ableton Live.

yeah the Monome looks fun too- but the tenori has the edge I think, because a; it's limited and b; it needs no external computer. SonicState's review of the tenori was appalling- a bit like what Future Music would of approached it- with no imagination. It reminded me of some sort of intelligent baby rattle for 'A class' babies in Huxley's Brave new World!! It was very cool too, seeing what Uwe Shmidt (aka Atom Heart) did with it.

As for Bob, please tell us what you think of it Very Happy

Actually, the first run of the Monome was limited as well and has sold out. I think it was 400 pieces or something in that order of magnitude.

The Tenorion is portable and can be used without a computer but the Monome is Open Source down to the hardware (there are tutorials for adding a inertia sensor) and if you don't want to extend it that way you can extend it using MAX/SC/CK/Reaktor/Processing/etc. People wrote Conway's life for it, for example. I think it's pritty cool and to me both would be about equally desirable.

Hi Guys,

It arrived and it is a fun little device, I think it is excellent.

If you are looking for a pattern sequencer to control other midi devices it is limited as you cannot change velocity and gate on a note by note basis. If yamaha could sort this out it would be great.

It seems to excel at using up your time, once you start playing with it time passes really quickly.

I have just rolled up a little number for you which is attached its a bit rough and ready as I am not much of a musician.

This basically took about 5 minutes to set up the background loop and then it is me playing in solo mode over the top with various tenori instruments and some drum samples which I have downloaded onto the device.

Any questions please ask and I will try to answer them.

Cheers

Andy

I have had one on loan for a week or so and I love the thing. Yes it is limited. Version 1.0 software will hopefully be improved upon. It is an audacious product from YAMAHA (about time!) and I support there venture into this new market. The fact you can load your own sounds in saves the day really, otherwise it would have been a cross between a PSR450 and an expensive executive toy.
Anything that lets you create electronic music in a different way i.e. not looking at a screen is a boon for me as Im sure it will be for scores of others. I can supply them if anybody wants one too!

Yep I'm looking forward to an update as well.

It could do with the ability to set velocity and gate time on a per note basis, this would please me greatly.

The thing I love about this device is that you can give it to someone that has never played a musical instrument and within a few minutes (and a bit of instruction) they are knocking out little tunes. Children love it.

Cheers

Andy

Yeah I agree about the velocity and gate. It should be simple to implement. perhaps the longer you hold the button the greater the velocity...

You are right about the ease of use too, even i can get music out of it...
