Howard nicely mentioned liking one of my macro shots - and since my gallery is very annoyingly not organized right now I thought I'd just share a few of my favorites. If you don't like macro shots - these will be fairly dull. I'm not terribly good - I just do this for fun. Link under the thumbnail goes to the full sized version.

There's a couple others I'd like to post - but I'll get them later.

Ok - a few more to annoy you guys with.

My wife took this photo - and then I messed with it a bit - eventually to be my new website front page, well maybe.

This page in general has some half way decent shots.

Anyway - that's enough - I've annoyed everyone by now I'm sure... Wink

Sony DSC-F717. Digital. This page has a bunch of photos of it...

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/f717.html

It looks odd to hold - but it fit really naturally in my hands.

Why hate to ask?

Not that I have a thing against photoshop - I love it actually - but I rarely touch up my photos. The only one changed at all is the grasshopper shot in the ones I put up. Only reason I mention it is from a what's the camera doing point of view - these are all straight from the camera and uploaded.

I'm mutilating a series of photos for the Relaxed Machinery cover art and such. Heavy manipulation - especially saturation.

Fun stuff - this is sort of my hobby when I'm in a rut with music - it's still very creative and a nice sort of relaxation thing.

Well, I must say you have an excellent camera. You are obiously technically very astute and a phtographic artist the has chosen a fine tool.

(I have one too). Shocked

I picked it because the reviews were great, and it was, at the time, the fastest camera out there. Fastest both in shooting recycle time, and in light sensitivty. I use it to take photos of electronic music concerts. These for some reason are almost always performed in very dark rooms. The Sony, as you know, can focus in total darkness.

The reason I hated to ask is because equipment discussions can be endless. But, this is a forum, not a mailing list, so nobody cares. If they aren't interested, they don't read. Wink

I had a Sony 707, but it was stolen, and I replaced it with the 717. Before that I had Nikons, the last being the 995. These were good, but had poor low light performance, and long recycle times. Those early Nikons also didn't have bad pixel maps, so virtually every picture taken in darkness had bright specks, always in exactly the same place, and thus required retouching.

Maybe the best thing about the 717 is the LCD eyepiece. This is invaluable for serious work.

I use a Canon PowerShot S230 for "casual" photography. It does a great job and it's very portable. That's what I take on vacations and family events. It takes great movies too. See: http://electro-music.com/avis/joker.avi

Actually, this is a bad example because I have compressed it tremendously to get it uploaded over a one way cable modem. If your interested, I can upload the full res file now that I have a two way cable modem.

Ah - that's great! The 717 is amazing. The new one - the 828 I think has specs that are a lot better - but I've actually seen some reviews that mention some downsides that didn't excite me at all. I'm not in the market for a new camera (ha! Not even remotely close after buying the 717 before the price dropped!).

It's funny - we actually bought the camera purely for my wife. She wanted an SLR film camera - and a cheaper digital - and then we started looking seriously and the 717 ended up being the thing she wanted due to how good it was, the 'feel' of the camer (it feels very solid and non-platicy as so many cameras feel...) - and so we decided to wait on the SLR. Now the digital SLR's are getting so inexpensive.

Anyway - the camera was purely for her - and then I just fell in love with it. I've ended up using it more than her so far. Although we just bought a photo printer finally last week and she's getting a bit more jazzed up about it. Smile

How much is the 717 selling for these days?
I'm going to need a new digital camera soon.

I don't know how much the 717 is selling for..

I just read these reviews. The 828 looks much nicer but has a few drawbacks compared to the 717.

arrow less light sensitivity

arrow purple fringing

arrow weighs about 1/2 lb more

The best thing about it as far as I'm concerned is the wider angle on the zoom lens. I think I'll hold on to my 717 for a while.

Yep - I'm extremely happy with the 717. Just not enough there to pull me up to the 828 - and besides I'm still paying off the 717 (24 months/no interest).

egw - when the 828 came out - the 717 dropped to $800 US list and then to $700 I believe.

I haven't taken many photos this year - but snapped a few recently and was pleased with these two. The first one was taken after a fairly heavy rain, though it was only drizzling when I was out taking the photos. I was a bit worried the rain would damage the camera, but everything seemed to be ok. The second is on a sunny day.

wow, those are quite good.
Your sony camera manages to zoom in that far and maintain clarity and focus. I knew those were very good cameras but now I am much more impressed.

It has a good macro lens on it. Most of my shots are with the lens literally within an inch or two of the object. Putting it up to f/6 or f/8 also helps for clarity a tremendous amount - but I need the tripod for those shots usually.

I also love photography, however I am saving my best shots for album art when I release an album. Embarassed

A few new shots - a toad, hornet, a semi-decent landscape shot (corn and sky...), some chickens, and some shots of our garage being scraped and painted (not that there's much interest in that!)

Took a ton of shots of a very pregnant looking praying mantis - I'll pop a few of those up soon.

Couple of thumbnails:

These are really great pix!

Macro? Hmm.. I have an old 135mm tele/macro for my pentax 67 and also a macro 50mm for my canon. I haven´t used those lenses for years. Shocked

I put a few of the praying mantis photos up from over the weekend. My wife and I are thinking this might be a female since the abdomen is so large. Possibly ready to lay eggs? (I have no idea how praying mantis' reproduce...) She mainly kept moving around - we found her in the eaves of the garage we were painting so moved her with a broom - which she stayed on the handle for quite a while. I moved her to a tree after taking the photos.

Nice. When you take these macro photos, do you use auto focus or manual mode. The Sony's seem to have the best manual focus I've seen.
