Weekend Stream Jams |
 |
|
electro-music.com now has Regularly Scheduled Radio Programs!
Check Out the Schedule.
You dont have to wait for the next electro-music.com streaming event to have some fun. Several of us have been streaming music informally from computer to computer on the weekends. Just come into the chatroom anytime...people are usually streaming off and on all weekend long from Friday night to Sunday night.
Depending on your computer, you can stream to several people, play as long as you want, and have fun playing in an informal environment. There is much more freedom available to the player in this scenario. Whether you want to perform a 2 hour ambient piece, 30 minutes of noise, or just wanted to show off some new patches...come on in and experiment with us.
It's also a great way to practice your streaming as well...getting better familiarity with the software makes things much easier for streaming events in the future, without the stress on you and the engineers trying to figure out problems in time for a performance.
It's hard enough to just play and improvise live, the more familiar you are with the streaming software, the quicker you will be able to troubleshoot and get back to making music.
Pleasant Streaming!!!

I'm usually in the chat on my hours and lurking otherwise. If you need help getting streaming, check in the chat. One of us will respond, eventually. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Come to the chat any time you want, but weekends tend to be best for this with more people around to participate. When you need help, ask and you will be helped. _________________ Jan

no its different Jez...
instead of using electro-music.com, you connect directly to shoutcast. so, im my case i use vista>edcast>shoutcast
(edcast and shoutcast are free!)
people connect to you with your ip address followed by the port number. you can find your ip address here..... http://www.whatismyip.com/
then you will add the port that your using after your that...for example: 8000
the whole thing should look something like this...
http://96.15.214.159:8000
Then people can simply just add this address into their favorite streaming player. _________________ ElectroCasa |

How do I connect Edcast to Shoutcast? Do I need Shoutcast on my PC or do I connect to it elsewhere? _________________ Jez

The main point is streaming directly from your own server - this isn't as much a big deal as listeners have not exceeded broadband upload speed.
So you set the stream to a local server and we all connect to that, it's a bit more ghetto but the listener count is low.
If these end up too popular, we have other options. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Today I was visiting Mom, so I gave her the link to stream off of my electro-music.com server port. You should have seen the smile on her face as she listened to her son's music. Now she wants an mp3 of it to play for friends and to listen to while exercising. I told her I can stream it to her any time because the engineers left the server port running for me. Of course my stream is automated, so that's how I could be there while streaming from home. How cool is that? _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |

I don't think so
However this is what they have to say in the manual:
"The tubeplug has three faces: it can be a receiver, sender or server. To start a music network session one server should be provided by one member of the session. In t-u-b-e hosted „real” performances the server is provided by the venue.
After the server is running, senders and receivers can log in the server. Senders can send stereo high quality audio streams and receivers can choose between the provided streams and receive them. Additionally the server provides an audio sum that can be choosen by the receiver too. This sum is the audio mix (pure same level addition) of all senders."
I believe it would be necessary to run the plugin as server in the shoutcast server. This, of course, is not possible, but a workaround would do the trick.
Also, the plugin is not very stable causing crashes every now and then.
The best thing about it is the latency which is very low, allowing for a true jam experience. _________________ https://opcabpol.bandcamp.com | https://www.mixcloud.com/Boiar | http://editoradoporto.blogspot.com |

For anyone interested in the weekend stream jams, we held one this evening (Friday night) and all had a great time. There were four of us, we played our sets for about an hour each, which were very nice, then we cranked up Jan's washing machine and hooked our microphones into our electro-music.com audio ports.
Then we ran vocoders and other software to distort our voices or just plain talked or sang a bit. I played the guitar and there was percussion and funky sounds like the crunch of eating an apple or bells or keys jangling. There was even a convincing UFO sound, haha. The washing machine mixed all of our streams together in a massive delay line loop so that the sound kept repeating and fading.
All in all we had a blast playing with our audio toys in various spontaneous ways. I recommend stopping by the chatroom if you want to have a little audio fun on weekend evenings. _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |

I am totally ignorant about shoutcasts, firewalls, etc. For Win with a router and virus detector, this is not for a noob. Bluehell and BluJ did their best to get me setup, but time ran out, and I never got it to work. To do the above shoutcast, I had to make my computer the server. For me (ignorant in these matters), this was no easy task. I suggest for people, like me, the following before they try and embark on a shoutcast performance: know how to get into your router, understand port range, make sure you have wordpad for shoutcast, because the default note pad makes it impossible to decipher edit changes. Know how to disable XP firewall. Apparently Norton also has a firewall. At this point I don't know if a simple disable would suffice. I got the impression I should uninstall Norton. After that, I don't know what more pitfalls await.
I do know this: Bluhell and BluJ and others on the chat were very patient and helpful. Perhaps someday in the future I will be able to participate in a weekend jam. _________________ Mark Mahoney

One of the fun features of this weekend's streaming was Jan's washing machine. He hooks up all three of his G2's, a few computers and some audio equipment to create a monstrosity that sounds like a washing machine. He then routes audio from multiple streams and the sound goes round and round in some sort of delay line loop. This is a whole lot of fun for us, we sing into it, play wind instruments or guitar or our software into it and have a good time. So much so that ocp made his own washing machine in Pure Data.
Well being inspired by this and also being a ChucKist, I wanted to make my own washing machine in ChucK. The source code is posted below. It is 32 delay lines one second long each, all summed into a sigmoid distortion effect with a low pass filter at the output. Thanks once again to kijjaz for teaching me in the ChucK forum how to make a sigmoid distortion effect in ChucK.
So of course I had to annoy my neighbors tonight at 1am by running it on my netbook with the headphones jack hooked up to the CD input of my guitar amp. It worked flawlessly! Now I have a washing machine to jam with on weekend evenings or maybe even during the week.
So here we have a bit of a phenomenon emerging from our streaming events, this washing machine thingie. I read that one of the fundamental purposes of electro-music.com is to be fertile ground for artists working together and developing novel ideas. Well I don't suppose that a huge delay line is all that novel but perhaps the way that we are all using them together is at least a bit original.
Oh, and my favorite quote from the chatroom this weekend was I think from ocp. When we had filled Jan's washing machine with an insane amount of echoing looping sound, it appeared to be going to blow up, so ocp said "There's smoke coming out of the washing machine!" Then we joked about thinking of the washing machine as a real piece of laundry equipment shaking itself off the floor and spewing out smoke. Haha, fun times.
Enjoy the file below or stop by the chatroom to add your sound to the washing machine monstrosity!
