Thanks to all the lovely peeps on this board and in particular in this modular sub-section. With your help and advice, I plunged into the modular world as a total newbie to it all and I'm loving it.

In fact, I loved it so much I've written a little article for Sound On Sound about my experiences of going modular. It's aimed very much at total beginners like myself and I namecheck this forum in it. So, if I've written it well enough, it'll encourage others to go modular!

I've become quite evangelical about modulars now: I wish I'd bought one decades ago! I was just very scared of the whole area, it can be quite intimidating even if you play non-modular synths.

I can't really say more at the moment but I will tease you by saying that one regular contributor on here should be, editors permitting, in the article in a boxout... I'll let you guess who that is... Razz

Here's some recent pics of my baby:

Thank you! I just hope I haven't made too many blunders! Remember, I am a newbie to all this. Embarassed

The most difficult thing was getting the tone right: I want people who've never tried modulars, who think it's "not for them" to give it a go. Then again, SOS readers are quite geeky so I can't insult their intelligence.

Also, doing the manufacturer roundup took aaages. There are so many now, seems every week there's a new one popping up.

I definitely think something is happening in the modular field. I don't know what the cultural basis is (the net? boredom with DAWs?) but it seems to be exploding.

Anyone got any ideas why it's gaining popularity so much?

Jyoti, you always have the best things to say!

It's good to learn that modulars are getting popular. It may be due to the fact that everything goes in cycles of about one generation, or 25-30 years or so. We're seeing 80's nostalgia now. No Wave is back or so I'm told. Chainmaille is becoming popular again. Also we just got done with 70's revival a few (several) years back.

Synths? I think they might be in their second iteration of popularity perhaps. Weren't the original synth's popular in the 60's? That places then two 25 year cycles into 2009.

Awww, thank you, Inventor! Embarassed

I've not been posting in a while because my personal life has been in ruins since last November. But I kept lurking here as it's full of the friendliest, least confrontational peeps I've yet found online! This forum has both educated me and saved me quite a lot of money! (And cost me some by inspiring gearlust... Wink )

I wonder if it's the same as the vinyl revival. For teens now, things like Cubase, Pro Tools and Logic are the big players, the establishment. If they're looking to rebel against that orthodoxy, hardware could be one way to go.

The '60s were the '20s, the '70s were the '50s, the '80s were the '60s and '40s and '30s, the '90s were the '70s, the noughties have been the '80s so that means they're also the '60s, '30s, '40s and '20s!

There, I think I've sorted it all out now! Laughing

Well, the way things are going, my article will be outdated by March 2010, things are moving so fast.

Does anyone think that Roland will ever step back into the modular game? I'd love to see a 100M for the Noughties! Cool

Clavia's G2?

I don't ever see Roland doing this sort of thing again- anyway there is too much competition from people like electro-music.com!

...and there is only this year left from the noughties anyway Wink
