Is there such a thing as a light weight, good sounding powered subwoofer?
For small theater applications.

Ummm... how light do you want it? And what kind of power? Audience of 50? 150?

I've recently bought a Bose LM1 Mk2 system and the bass on that is fantastic. The actual subs (I have two) are pretty light but if you wanted just the subs (rather than the full PA), you'd have to buy the Bose little amps to go with them.

For a smaller solution, ark kindly pointed me towards this.

I also use a Genelec sub with my 1029As and that's pretty small and light. However, it would probably get lost in a theatre.

Light weight would mean anything less than 50 pounds.
Theater size up to about 200 people.

I would be using it with a pair of Mackie SRM450s. The Mackie subwoofer is nice, and works well with them, but it's too heavy to transport by myself.

Ohh... for that size of audience, I can't think of many options apart from things like the Bose. The Acoustic Image may be able to do the job but I've never used one myself, sorry.

Any opinions?

Greg,

The thing that's nice about the EV unit, aside from it's low weight, is that this sub woofer is scalable such that you can add another passive driver in case you need the extra coverage. Or you can just use it stand alone in smaller venues. Like any other electronics though, I would read all the reviews you can get your browser to turn to. Is there a way you can get a listen before you lay down the cash?

But it seems that the second amp would be adding unnecessary weight and cost if I didn't use it to power a second speaker.
Couldn't find any reviews except the ones posted by the manufacturer.
No decent music shops around here - I would have to go down to Phila to try one out.

Yes, the unit is a bit costly. having a second amplifier explains why but the overall weight of the unit seems not too bad at 35 pounds Cool My guess they are Class "D" amplifiers which are very light and efficient.

Zzounds had only one review. If you can spend the time and check this one out in Phila, I would. Seems like a sweet unit to me Wink

Good luck and let us know what you finally get Very Happy

Electro-Voice's spec sheet for the SB2A suggests that it's 3db down at 55 Hz and 10db down at 43 Hz. Is that really an improvement over the SRM450?
