A question abput iPods and Windows |
 |
|
I'm not an Apple guy. However, my son is pleading for an iPod. <sigh> I may get him one, but I want to find out how they interface to Windows computers.
The one thing I like about my Creative Labs MP3 player (it's pretty crappy overall) is that I can just plug it in and it acts like a storage device - I can just drag mp3s from my hard drive to folders in the player. Moving data around without any additional software - what a great idea!
Can I do something like this with the iPod, or do I have to install iTunes or some other software on the Windows XP machines?
Thx x 10^6 |

hmm ... when you have an iPod you'll want apps I guess .. or I would .. your son too likely ... that'll need an app store account and iTunes and all that ... and likely even for initial startup of the iPod ... IIRC.
Still .. I think its possible, when no iTunes is installed, for the iThing to be seen as a USB drive .. on windows that was. _________________ Jan
also .. could someone please turn down the thermostat a bit.

There are a few apps that allow you to do this, but yes, you need iTunes to install it.

You can make ipods storage devices, but you do have to install iTunes to do this, at least initially. Here's an idea- once you have your iPod configured for a storage device, plug it into another machine that doesn't have itunes on it. I'm pretty sure the other machine will see it as a USB mass storage device, without needing itunes.
If i remember, I'll try this myself- and post the results. _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |

It doesn't work. You just get a pop-up message that "the device" (iPod) is unrecognised. _________________ ACHTUNG!

iTunes on windows is ok. My rants about it from several years ago are obsolete; they have fixed it. If you get the iPod touch, you can get an app to make it do what you want - be an external device. For music files there is no need for anything but iTunes. You can drag and drop any music to the iDevice.
Get him his toy and download morphwiz. You'll never give it back to him. _________________ --Howard
