Hmm.. as musicians go.. Joe Zawinul is pretty good. Amy X Neuburg is awesome, and the Electro-Music 2005 event will be full of excellent acts.

RedVenice.

I'm personally kinda down on top 5 lists and stuff because it makes music into sort of a popularity thing. That's why we don't have ratings on songs posted to this site and such. Still I think you have a good idea listing some of your favs. Like you say, "be a tree". Mention someones name that might prompt someone else to check out that artist. It could be a life-changing thing for them, you never know.

So, without saying these are the "top" musicians, I like (right now at least)

Amy X Neuburg
Squarepusher
Aphex Twin
Luciano Berio
Robert Ashley
Lorie Anderson
Stein Grebstad
Static Probe Emitter
Joker Nies
Jan Punter
Kid Baltan
Tom Dissevelt
Bebe and Louis Barron

There are many others. Like I said, I don't like ratings, but Amy is in a league of her own, IMHO. I'll make an exception for her.

[editor's note: moving this from Commentary and Editorials to Schmooze.]

Had nearly skipped this, as I thought music is not a contest, but now I start to become famous ... good I checked :-)

Hmm five is too many at this moment, must go do painting, see if the big knob fits, etc.

But don't forget Jan Boerman, he is the composer who made me realize music could be made from abstract sounds, not playing notes I mean ( for instance).

Jan.

no one mentioned Walter/Wendy Carlos but is a big mistake: thanks to her "Switched On Bach", in 1968, electronic music was catapulted into the public consciousness and that is not her only contribute to "electro-music".

Wendy is certainly very talented, but I never got into her music. Probably my limitation, not her's though. Switched On Bach was quite an achievement, but the music was after all J. S. Bach's.

I didn't care for it the first time I heard it (Wendy's music), but based on your opinion of it, I'll certainly try to find it and give it another chance. After all, at one time I didn't care for Mozart, but now I do.

I never got into the music of Sibelius either, but I'm gonna give it another go too, based on comments on the Ligeiti thread. http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-6468.html.

Hmm.. i guess I have oversold him.. he hasn´t anything out on CD at the moment . I guess he is "unreleasable".. you know.. Too bad. This is awesome stuff. Robert sent me these CD copies you see. Right now he is busy with some concert somewhere. Sweden doesn´t find his work of much value or interest I guess. BTW.. why isn´t Robert here? He should be.. Gotta kick his ass I guess. Shocked Cool

Yep. Wendy Carlos "Clockwork Orange" with Timesteps etc (all electronic, not the soundtrack one) is one of my earliest musical memories, along with Bo Hansson (LOTR). Alos Carlos's "Sonic Seasons" is a masterpiece.
Mosc, I am happy that you may listen to Sibelius after my rant. I avoided him because he was so readily available, if you know what I mean. Start with the 4th (dark) or Tapiola (really nice, sad and fierce) Douglas Lilburn whose electro-acoustic works have just been releasd on CD. They cover a period 1965-1979. All are brilliant and very New Zealand. I HIGHLY recommend these.

There's a few good ones you've got covered already.

I can't possibly do a top 5 list, but IMHO somebody should mention Klaus Schultze in this company, so I'll do that forthwith Smile :

Klaus Schulze!

My earliest infuluence is Edgar Varese. Followed by Wendy Carlos. In contemporary times Steve Roach comes to mind.
