THX. Very Happy

..but I also hope it kinda explains how some of these patch ideas can sound like.

Yes, it does explain a lot. It makes me appreciate this music more than I would if I had not read your posts there.

That does not diminish the music, just my ability to appreciate.

I am still not sure I understand how this would work. I understand the idea of treating the wet reverb signal as an oscillator, but I am not sure where I would find the ADSR to run it into. Are there LFO, Filer, ADSR boxes that I can buy? A piece of equipment or plug-in that allows me to manipulate any audio signal as though it were a synthesiser?

An analog modular synth will do just fine. What you need is a module ( and you will probably want 20 of these ) that can sort out the level/gain problems. Cynthia is making one of these. There are others out there too.

The Anything Module is a send/return type interface that turns all your effect boxes, stomp boxes, and processors into synthesizer modules.

Want to process your oscillator cluster through that vintage Ibanez fuzz? Or maybe you want to hear what a reverberated transient sounds like controlling your Modcan VCF. Need a fixed filter bank? Just patch-in that equalizer you've got laying around. The possibilities are obviously endless.

Modular synthesizer voltage levels can reach 30Vpp at clipping. In contrast, a guitar stomp box is made to handle about 0.2Vpp - over 40db difference!
The Anything Module takes care of this for you by attenuating the synthesizer down to "consumer" levels on the way out, and amplifying the external effect back up to "modular" levels on the way back. Low-noise amplifiers are used throughout in true variable-gain configuration. This means you hear your effect, not the noise of the recovery amp.

You get adjustable send and return controls with red/green LEDs showing you proper recovery level so you get it right. The Anything Module features a mono section and separate stereo section. You can process your old Univox tape echo and a Midiverb (in stereo) at the same time. You can also use the recovery sections alone to bring in things like tape decks and CD players. This changes everything... um, I mean anything!

Aditionally, any noisegate with either a sidechain or "key" input or the option of midi triggering it will do as a envelope. That "anything module" is nice but for many aplications any stray little mixer will do too. If you eccidentally run out of stray mixers then two jack sockets and a pot will happily take a controlable amount of volume out of your sound.

This never worked well for me. Properly designed adapters like the Anything Module is more like it. YMMV Very Happy

I don't doubt it's better, but it also cost two orders of magnitude more and the delivery time on the pot is way better. If I need a extra volume trim at 3am the pot'll be up and running at 4am. Admittedly it's more something for noise then for pop productionms aimed at MTV.

I have to admit that I like it when the pedals distort. As the dutch saying goes; "one distorting pedal is better then 10 clean digital synths."

I have an old Alesis MIDIVERB II, wich those of who have heard it, will know as a cheap and unimpressive unit. After having had it disconnected for quite a while, I used it again (for old times sake), and found that I _do_ love the beautiful program 28.

It's _not_ natural or even remotely "good" - but produce a "lost in outer space" sound wich is perfect for some of my Oberheim Matrix 6 patches Smile

A friend of mine once played me some samples he'd treated with a "natural reverb chamber". This consisted of a small speaker and a microphone placed inside a metal locker. I worked very well for some drum sounds.

I recently did a reconstruction of a track for Chris Orczy. I processed his original track a lot using various natural chambers. I had microphones all over the apartment, and some outside too. I should add that I think of this as processing rather than simply adding reverb. I think he has released this CD now.

I've used the reverbs on my modulars like that for decades, so I know exactly what you mean. I also use either effects sends/returns or aux's to break-out of the console -> modular for further processing, then back to the console.

One of my favorite reverb tricks on the modular is the gated-reverb, where ya take a couple of osc.s > mixer>filter>reverb>vca, and set the 'release' time to zero. You only get the reverb while a key is depressed (or just feeling a little sad)
Emerson used this effect quite extensively.

Using good old-fashioned click-tracks, you can sync'-up all of these analog synth effects/modules with the recorded tracks, and overdub some pretty kewel stuff.

I have the Lexicon MPX550 and the TC Electronic M-One. Very good reverbs, but I like the M-One the most. In serial after the M-One I have hooked up an Akai MFC42 analogue filter for some efx at times.
