Hi,

I was wondering if anyone here has felt restricted by LE at all?

I have studied the version comparison PDF a few times over the past 6 months and I reckon Cubase SL is all I would ever need. Advanced notation and surround mixing aren't things I'm interested in, hence ruling out SX. And Cubase SE seemed like it could be a bit limiting in terms of track count/inserts/VSTs than SL. But now I've got LE (for free) I'm pretty sure I could achieve anything I want with it. I also suspect that the limitations LE imposes could very well be a good thing, forcing me to be creative with the solutions I develop.

I'm not a complete novice either. I've been using Notator for the ST for 10 years+ and used Nuendo at college. So I feel I know a fair bit about the full 'toolkit' that is available in more advanced software.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is, or if it's even got one. I'm just thinking out loud. I know it reads like a bloke trying to justify not spending £250 on some software, but, once I've bought Reason, probably the next peice of software on my list is Cubase SL... Confused

Cheers

Chris

If SL has all the features you need then I guess you should stick with it. There is no point in overinvesting. If you for some reason need SX later on you can always upgrade.

I had planned to upgrade my Cubase 5.1 VST 32 to SX. I started out with SE just to get a feel for it. I have also tested the full SX version at a friend´s studio. After 6 months with Cubase SE I decided to go for Logic 7 instead.
Personally I wasn´t too happy with any of the plugins bundled with SE/SX. YMMV.

Hi seraph,

Thanks for the welcome!

Inferno is visual effects software/hardware. It's used for high end compositing on feature films, commercials and pop promos.

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5562767&siteID=123112

So an inferno artist is someone who uses this software!

And as elektro80 spotted, sometimes this work can be very questionable in nature! A dating agency run by fairies indeed...

Once again, thanks for the welcome,

Chris

i know a lot of people who stick with vst5. i know nathan fake* uses that software, so have a listen to him, and if you reckon you need to do anything wildly more advanced then get something more complex.

*i still can't decide if he's "conventional" or not in his production. wierd...

C5VST32 is excellent, both on the mac and on the PC. It is of course very dated now, but it does the job. Still the bundled plugins weren´t top notch, but I think these did have a different character to them than what the SE/SX family has. SE is an excellent stripped down DAW. The plugins are sad though. (! albatross-ware !).

I'm not knocking LE, far from it. It's pretty well featured for a free piece of software!

I'm a newbie too. I used to record nature tracks with CoolEdit. Now I just got a Lexicon interface and Cubase LE came with it. I'm in the process of learning it and if I got a 'cubase for dummies' book, would it pretty much work with the LE version too?

I'm just curious what I'm missing with LE and whether LE is adequate for the home recording novice.

I just downloaded free software http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/

I was looking for something to be able to legibly print out the sheet music I've been incoherently scribbling for a while. This was a great find.

It popped up the Lexicon as a Midi when I installed it, so I pressed OK. Now it plays everything I type in with 100+ instrument choices as well as reverb settings. I just about went into convulsions when I figured that one out.

Anyway, I'm now wondering how to interface this with the recording software (Cubase LE). I feel like I've had this midi stuff on my computer for two years now and never knew it. Now, I'm trying to find out where it's hidden. Something tells me that this whole "computer music" thing is going to get really interesting over the next few months. Hearing something I wrote and put down on guitar last year played on "virtual piano" was a rush!

Hey laura, if you are broke (yes been there, done that Laughing ) take a look at Reaper.

http://reaper.fm/

It's kind of 'free' and it's not. It all depends on how 'flushed' you feel Wink
