Sigh- a big sigh too- but is it really possible to have a forum discussing chaos- based 'chance' experimentation where 2 seemingly identical toys may do very different things when circuit bent?

What a shame as circuit bending is such fun!

This is a really good site I found please do take a look before this circuit bending forum fades for good to the great dot-IC resting place in the sky Shocked

http://www.circuitbenders.co.uk/index.html

Any other links appreciated- and I'll make this thread into a sticky window Smile

[edit dnny: made this post sticky]

want to wake up on your way to work ?
download these podcast´s to your MP3 player and listen them in the morning. good mood guarantee for the whole day.

the Difficult Listening Channel brings you the nicest noise and circuit bended sounds.

and there is more : regurtitron podcast´s

Quote:
There is music in every sound, including noise. What might seem, at first exposure, to be too intense, bizarre and unlistenable is actually art. Sound manipulation and sculpture through the abuse of technology becomes music through it's resulting distorted colors and sonic patterns.

Before you disregard the likes of ReGurgiTron or claim this or similar projects to be a joke, remember that in the 1950's rock and roll was considered by many to be nothing but mere noise.

Maybe true, but it was held by hundreds of millions to be music. IMHO, it has taken 50 years to realize that it was mere noise after all. Shocked

i think its the time for stickiness to arrive

guide for safer circuit-bending
This FAQ is about the modification of cheap music keyboards and electronic sound toys to convert them into unusual music synthesizers.
before you open any screws read this - and it may safe you from simple mistakes.

and here is yeat annother good source on C.bending
www.sailormouth.org
features:
Two 555 based trigger sequencer circuits. 1 modular and 1 add-on.
Speak&* membrane keypad info.
Speak&* membrane keypad swapped for rotary switches.
Loop circuit using rotary switches for toys with matrix keypad/buttons.
V-Tech pitch shift mods.
V-Tech Alphabet Desk mods and bends.
V-Tech Music Major pcb with components, and button/key matrix.
Cascading 4017s explanation of how it works and some test results.
Tone Organ modded 555 based osc.

Great sticky...forgive me if I missed it, but I didn't notice this one:

http://www.roilnoise.com/bending.htm

All the other links I have are already here.

Oh, this is interesting, saw it recently on musicthing:

http://highlyliquid.com/

Check out the Glitchdesk system, it enables you to link lots of bent machines and control them with MIDI. Cool

great. so there is some "Krets bending" -activity in Sweden also.
there might be people coming to STHLM in the end of this summer if we can organise some event. (if-if-if)

i feel so stupid now. when i was in school i did not concentrate in the Swedish lessons. it would payback now.

i see dach have also find his way in Smile

please Pehr, keep us posted how your experiments whit Casio SA-10 and other stuff goes.

BTW i edited your link on the links forum. it can be now found in two places. the original and Collectives and Communities > Forums

If there´s going to be an event I´d really like to come Very Happy STHLM isn´t far from where I live. Will you post a thread when you know if? Confused

Yes I think I got the link from dach. There´s not much activity there, just me, dach and 0x00...

About the SA-10 yes... I have bent it... I have a swedish thread here.
I istalled the"deep crash" push button, the "high cut" switch (or low pass filter switch Wink ) and the "synth tone" switch found in this thread and it worked! Very Happy I got really really really really cool loops and random sounds from it with the "deep crash".

The other bends worked too, but alas it is dead know Sad It doesn´t sound at all... I have searched the pcb but I cant find anything wrong... Maybe I could bring it, if there is going to be any event in sthlm, if anyone wants to take a look at it. Rolling Eyes

sad to hear that all those sound are gone. it reminds me of the 6th rule of hacking (Nicolas Collins -Hand made electronic music)
Rule#6: Many hacks are like butterflies: beautiful but short-lived

i´ve seen that thread, but it has not been that active lately, has it? Confused

There are rules? Surprised I only knew one rule about not bending things that use 220V AC...

no it haven't been active, before we can say "Short circuit" the summer is over and we are suppose to have a meeting? - well a meeting is not something very hard to make - but if we want it to be some kind of event - even a small one - we need to organise it just a little. where when how...

Pehr wrote:

There are rules? Surprised I only knew one rule about not bending things that use 220V AC...

that's the core philosophy of bending. also the second rule of N.Colins

there are some rules - i don't like rules too much but let's call them guidelines

these are the guidelines of hardware hacking acordind to Nicolas Colins

#1. Fear not
#2. Don't take apart anything that plugs directly into the wall
#3. It is easier to take something apart than put it back together
#4. Make notes of what you are doing as you go along, not after
#5. Avoid connecting the battery backwards
#6. Many hacks are like butterflies: beautiful but short-lived
#7. In general try to avoid short circuits
#8. In electronics some things are reversible whit interesting results, but some things are reversible only whit irreversible results
#9. Use shielded cable to make all audio connections longer than 8'', unless they go between amplifier and speaker
#10. Every audio connection consists of two parts: the signal and a ground reference
#11. Don't drink and solder
#12. After a hacked circuit crashes you may need to disconnect and reconnect batteries before it will run again
#13. The net value of two resistors connected in parallel is a little bit less than the smaller of the two resistors; the net value of two resistors connected in series is the sum of the two resistors
#14. Kick me off if i stick
#15. You can always substitute a larger 1.5-volt battery for a smaller one, just make sure you use the same number of batteries, in same configuration
#16. It's always safer to use separate batteries for separate circuits
#17. If it sound good and doesn't smoke, don't worry if you don't understand it
#18. Start simple and confirm that the circuit still works after every addition you make
#19. Always leave your original breadboard design intact and functional until you can prove that the soldered-up version works
#20. All chips may look alike on the outside without being the same on the inside - read the fine print
#21. All chips expect "+" and "-" power connections to their designated power supply pins, even if these voltages are also connected to other pins for other reactions - withhold them at your own risk
#22. Always use a resistor when powering an LED, otherwise the circuit and/or LED might blow out
#23. Distortion is Truth
#24. It is easier to drill round holes than slots
#25. Never trust the writing on the wall-wart

BTW have you tried the #12. for your Casio?

yes I have... I have even tried other batteries. I have mesured the voltage they give and traced the voltage on the PCBs. I have checked the reset-button... Everything seems right... Sad
