Heh. Cool with the pauses and different harmonic collections in the 1st Grind. Made me think of it portraying a "Noise Opera". Smile That gave me more ideas for switching between things as well. (I'm almost done converting my 1 IN / 2 OUT switch, to 2 IN / 1 OUT. That'll help switching between things, to alternate, as you're doing. Smile )

Grind0005 - mmmmm - a robot trying to find JUST the right 'radio station'? And finally does, at the end? Laughing Very Happy

Way to go, Mark! You are really getting some interesting sounds from your Lunetta! I especially liked the first two - but very unexpected sounds from all three of them.

Rich - you have an interesting talent at relating sounds to pictures in your head - awesome!

Thanks for posting that Bruce! So ....... I presume the Control A, B and C bits then, are run at audio frequencies, to get the (cough cough) waveform that is set, by the 8 on/off switches?
Wait - that doesn't work, as something results, with all 8 of them off. scratch

Uh oh. I'm stumped. ?? Surprised

Heh. Thanks Bruce! Very Happy I often relate sounds to previous experiences. When composing, I do as well. Smile Trying to turn what's imagined, into sounds. Smile

Related - yesterday, I had the thought of building a 'vowel filter' for my coming String Machine. The square waves generated may not be high enough in harmonic content, but still - could produce some interesting sounds, as well. Smile

Oooh! Formant filtering! I love that idea! I'll look forward to running off with your circuits, Rich.

The pattern generator - well - I dunno about no switches.....It's doing something, no doubt - but I think it's magic. Confused

I used the pattern generator by inputing three clocks and manipulating the switches for interesting patterns coming out of it - I then used the patterns for input to the R/2R or other clock inputs...

If you do audio rate clocks you get some changes in sound by manipulating the switches - but I didn't use it that way...

This is my 1st new recording in a few weeks.

I just finished moving my 2 panels into 1 panel, along with adding 2 x (active) Portamento modules. 1 of them was used for this recording. (Patch details on request, as I haven't 'erased' the patch yet. Wink

There's a (cough cough) 'violin' (cough) 1/4 hit of acid 'melody' soon followed by a 'cellist', who's had a little bit too much to drink, on top of a strong thunderstorm that I recorded live outside, in late April.

Hope y'all enjoy. Smile

wow, sweet piece!! i really dig the cellist (deeper) part, very trippy atonalness overall, while still maintaining the hint of a key! cant wait to have a 'real' modular lunetta done, gotta continue the oscillator/clock portion of this one after dinner, hopefully they will test fine and I can move on to the melody generator tonight. will look for more info on the portamento module.. cool stuff thanx for sharing =]

Very Happy Much-o glad that you liked! That one is one of my fave 'musical' ones that I've done, so far. Smile

Slower Attack and Release on both the 'cough cough' violin and cello type instruments. Went well with the storm in the background. Smile

The 'cello' melody was played by the 4017/4051 Melody Generator. The 'violin' one, was quite the complex set of 3 x 4 Bit Shift Registers; the 8 bit R-2R DAC and CD4024 clock dividers, along with some other minor stuff. (I'd have to check the patch for the details as I haven't 'erased' it yet. Smile

I just put a quick schematic for the (active) Portamento up on my BB earlier today. Very simple.

Good look with your current build. Looking fotward to hearing what you start doing, as well. Smile

Rich!
I very much enjoyed this example of your machine - and your creativity. The whole thing works together very nicely - love the storm - and the Lunetta parts are a great fit.

Congrats!

I took my own advice and recorded a patch to share.

The timings on this are influenced by the VCO frequencies - which in turn influence the VCO's.
Modules used are an R/2R, 4017/4051 Melody Gen, 8 bit shift registers (2), 4094, 40106 VCO's (2) and a 555 VCO.
Passive portamento provided by a capacitor in a breadboarded experiment (inactive) I had patched into one of the VCO's.

Here's a new one, short but sweet. Your dog might not like it, there are some pretty high frequencies in there. It's just a 555 clock into a 4040 ripple counter then probably some NAND and XOR and 4094. All of that mucks around with some 40106 oscillators.
http://droffset.com/sound/lunettagroovetastic05162009.mp3

I've been ending up with some of the same sort of sounds lately, sort of drones between two notes, so I've added a 4051 and am almost done with wiring a 4015 , hopefully a couple of other goodies as well. Plus my bulk ICs are in... Twisted Evil

How are you mucking about wioth the 40106's?
The variety of sounds grows very quickly with each new circuit you add.
Build like a madman!

Well my output from each 40106 osc is just an aligator clip to the center pin of the potentiometer. The other end goes to my amazing-super-simple mixer. As I get an interesting pattern from the rest of the machine I'll connect it to the same mixer point as the osc, which i think sends booster power into the osc, creating much havoc and gnashing of teeth. I love it.

The most obvious example is to get a rapid 555 into a 4040, then connect two outputs from the 4040 to the same point as the 40106 osc, then that goes out to the amp or mixer.

But it's quite repetetive, so to stir it up, between those stages I've been sending the various 4040 tempos through NANDs and the 4094, then hit the oscs with that output to modulate it. It looks sweet on the scope.

EDIT:
Forgot to say that the potentiometer can still be used to 'tune' the pitch range of the changes.

AND, if you tune 2-3 different mixer points to a chord, you can have automatically harmonizing synched wackiness. in 4/4 time Smile

Now if only i could make it do 3/3 time...hmm...

Ok, here's a longer one, about 6 and a half minutes. It's just me messing around with the Slacker Melody Gen, so it's not really organized and edited, but I had to keep every note! Smile Consider it a cool background track, hehe.

Please enjoy.

555 into 4040 into shift reg and NAND, into melody gen A B C

40106 osc connected to a 4040 output, then into melody gen clock

much twiddling and noodling

Kudos Slacker!

This is really nice. I would not have thought this to be a Lunetta from the sound of it. It shows that you don't need complicated gear to have expressive music.

Thanks Mosc! Having lots of fun with the Offset Groovtasticator. Smile

Should I be worried that it writes better music than I do? Cool

Please enjoy this new one.
http://droffset.com/sound/lunettagroovetastic06182009.mp3

The key module is a 4011 set up as dual inverter oscillators, and most of the clip is just using one of them as a VCO. The circuit is taken from a novelty coin flip simulator, so there's a gate in, and when it's high the VCO oscillates like a madman, then when it's low there's a big capacitor that discharges and the oscillations slow down the flipflopping of these two LEDs for heads and tails until it stops and there's your coin flip result. So I took the VCO part and used various 4040 outputs to connect to the power and the gate in, switching it up, noodling around, come cool VCA-like interations in there!

Currently revamping my machine and placing the modules into a nice three-shelf case to look a bit nicer.
Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.
This is a mix of old and new modules repackaged in a nice bookshelf thingy, the panels are about 10 inches high.

Top Row:
6x 40106 oscillators
555 timer
4040
4094
4017
4x each of NAND , NOR , XOR

Middle Row:
Little 386 Amp with output to mp3 recorder
a coinflip cirtuit based on two 4011 VCOs
4017/4051 melodgy gen
3x R/2R dacs with 1 portamento to use the last opamp in the LM324
a panel of various resistor combinations for summing and cv

Bottom row....
???????

Offscreen is the 8032 setup on a breadboard, not sure if that project will keep going...

It's been quiet in the Lunetta Forum!

Here's a little I recorded this evening using the lower voices possible on the Lunetta, and slower clock speeds.

It's all 'hands off' - with a little reverb and delay on the voices.

You guys are taking Lunetta sounds to a different place. Very nice.

RF, your track is amazing. The sounds are very rich. The "algorithm" is also quite interesting. I like where you are going.

thanks
