Here's a little quickie project I finished tonight -
I built this one years ago from a kit 6-7 years ago, and it was one of the first things I ever built. I didn't really know what I was doing, and wasn't too surprised when it didn't work. I put it away, but worked on it again a few years later, but didn't get it going completely then either. Finally took it out again a few weeks ago, and looked it over, reflowed all the solder joints, and it worked! To celebrate, I designed this 1U motm format panel for it. |

My screening is far from perfect. Some thin lines and letters don't come out, but since you asked,.
I'm burning my screens with two 250Watt bulbs hung about 18in from the surface. The stencil is held down with a sheet of glass and books underneath for support.
It takes around 12-13 mins.
The other important thing is when spreading the emulsion, try to get it as thin as possible. I use a squeegee on both sides. Then you can just use a hairdryer for a few minutes until it's translucent and you're ready to burn.
As for getting the ink to stay on the metal, I'm using a coat of clear rustoleum. Otherwise it scratches off.
You could try the oil-based inks like they use on street signs but it's a real pain to clean. _________________ DRONEGOAT |

When coating screens, a screen printing coating trough is the way to go. They aren't that expensive and give a near perfect thin emulsion coverage. Makes a big difference when washing out the stencil. Well worth the outlay, particularly if you are making up a lot of screens.
I have used a 400 WATT High Pressure Sodium lamp used for hydroponics in the past. The sun is a good alternative to a light bulb, and it's free! |
