I reckon Sonar can handle VSTi plugins?
There is a whole lot of free virtual synths out there. You should check out those.
Most of the commercial products from Native Instruments, Arturia and GMedia are all excellent. However, many of these are "clones" of vintage hardware instruments, and I am not sure if these actually make any sense at all if you do not know the originals.
One extremely nice virtual instruments suite is the Korg Legacy Collection. You even get a midi controller thrown in. I think this one is THE softsynth package to get right now. Start out with that one.. and then get back here for more advice..
BTW: What kind of music are you making? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Hmm... everyone loves Reason.. I did test Reason 1 and I was not completely convinced by the sound quality of that one, but I hear the new versions have been improved a lot. Anyway, Carlo ( seraph ) always makes reason sound excellent.. so he should know what he is talking about. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

well...can you make a sampler sounds always good it depends chiefly on the sound libraries you use and those I use are not necessarily the ones provided by Propellerheads plus add my unsurpassable programming skill and that's the perfect recipe for a magical mystery tour what am I talking about _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

kind of. After VST was out, Cakewalk starting wising up to the whole virtual instrument thing. The result was "DXi" plug-ins for Sonar. Think of it as Cakewalk's VST equivelant. Most serious softsynths cater to both VST and DXi plug-ins now-a-days. (But I might add that I have found VST plugs + ASIO drivers feature the lowest latency....this is nit-picking though, the DXi still works for all practical purposes.) |

For the record, Sonar can handle both types of plugins, DXi and VST. Before shelling out real money, I'd try all of the free ones. There are many, but try here first http://www.kvraudio.com/ _________________ --Howard
