It seems a shame to have all those DX7 patches floating around, and a G2 with such fine DX7-type modules, yet no easy way to get those patches into a G2.

Conversion by hand is tedious (understatement). I have one of those 100,000+ patch DX7 zip files. Problem is, the vast majority are slightly tweaked factory presets. Seems the only thing easy to change on a DX7 was the patch name Rolling Eyes Still, even if you disregard all the useless duplicates, there are a ton of great sounds.

I agree, the mutator is great with FM, once you get past a couple of operators at least.

It comes up with sounds I don't understand any more than before, but it makes finding them easier

It's called the iChing way to modular synthesis:

Thousands of DX7 patches were once converted to the NM patch format...

i know... shame on me for neglecting them. Embarassed i did try to create a few of my own on the NM, but 18 knobs only go so far when you're trying to play with so many variables. the G2's interface has opened my eyes to the possibilities....

I find the DX patches to sound beautiful, but they are very hard to intuitively understand. The patch mutator is a great tool for exploring...

exactly! Smile i'm still on a massive learning curve with DX FM, but I can already see that getting a feel for how a stack of 3 or more operators with specific settings might sound could well be beyond me. mutating your way through all that complex math is great fun! Very Happy

Maybe this page is interesting for you:

I had lots of fun with the DX7-FX-patches with the Arpeggio turned on - that made them go wild. Changing algorithms then turned them sometimes instantly into very sweet sounds. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in one patch.

Dang, I keep forgetting the mutator and adjustor are available when patching. Maybe that is good.

I just found a bug in the patch adjustor ... and now it is sent. It is a bit embarassing, so I will not mention it Rolling Eyes
