I've been unable to patch for a while due to renovation at my house. That's winding down now, so I can get back to music.

Here's a PM cello with two strings. It doesn't mean that you can play double stops, but that when playing an interval of a 3rd or larger, the model switches from one string to the other. Smaller intervals are played with a single string.

Unfortunately, this performance requires an expanded G2.

Bow force and vibrato rate/level are controlled by either the mod wheel (morph#1/midi CC#1) or a breath controller (morph#8/midi CC#2).

There's a short sound example of it here.

Wow. To say this is impressive is an understatement. It sounds very good.

Is it possible to make this polyphonic? I tried just setting the mode from mono to poly and is doesn't seem to be that simple.

Thanks Howard. No, polyphonic operation isn't possible. It uses 7 DSPs just to make one note: a string controller, two strings, and four filter banks.

btw, I forgot to mention that both slots A and B use the mod wheel and breath controller morph groups. For proper expression, both those slots need to be set to the same MIDI channel.

This is incredible!

It looks like breath controller and wheel do the same thing - is that true? I have no breath controller...

Any suggestions on playing technique?

Thanks. Yes, the mod wheel and breath controller do the same thing. I prefer a breath controller, but I know most people don't have one, so I just copied the morph group to the mod wheel.

For slow passages, I use crescendos to bring in the note and some vibrato. For fast passages, I don't add much expression.

I continue to be blown away by this sound - I cannot say enough about it. I pulled it out while my band was working out a cover of an old Jefferson Airplane song, and now I am committed to using it - except that I need more of a violin than a cello.

How would I go about making this more violin-like? Specifically, I need to raise the upper range by a fifth or so. The sound dies out very impressively at the high end, but I need a few more high notes. Any thoughts on how to approach this?

Wow, this brings back memories.

Unfortunately I don't have my G2s any more, so I can't modify the performance and listen to the results of my changes. EQ'ing that thing was a significant effort, and involved matching the G2's spectrum to a recorded cello at various notes across the cello's range.

I'm now creating violins and cellos in Reaktor, and doing the EQ by convolving the output of the string model with impulse responses of actual instruments. If you've got Reaktor and a real-time convolver I can send you some stuff that may be useful. But I'd need a day or two of physical access to a G2 to experiment with the editing needed to extend that cello's range.

Attached is a screen shot of a Reaktor version I hope to finish up over Christmas holiday. If you're interested I'll send it to you (along with the impulses) when I'm done.

Unfortunate indeed!

No, I don't have Reactor or such instruments. The G2 is it for me.

Thx anyway - I may try to start dismantling it, see what I learn
