Your Opinion needed on G2 purchase! |
 |
|
I am comtemplating getting a G2. The only thing that is stopping me is that alot of people say to not get this if you are unfamiliar with synthesis. Well, I am familiar with and understand Subtractive synthesis, but that is about the extent of my knowledge.
I was wondering your opinions on if it is too difficult. I see it as a learning experience and oppotunity to learn some things. Were any of you in the same position I am in? If so, what did you do. Thanks for the help.
BTW, i have a virus, so that takes care of the subtractive end. I was lloking for the G2 to expand the sounds available adn to learn about alot of different kinds of synthesis. |

Download the demo and try it. You don't get polyphony or the reverb/delay modules, but you'll see what it's all about.
I don't think this is difficult. It's my opinion that you get the most out of a G2 if you enjoy tweaking and experimentation. As you can see, this forum is a very rich resource. There a lots of people to help you if you get stuck. _________________ --Howard

I would say get the G2 if you know some synthesis, and want to know more. It's an incredible learning machine for those who have a technical bent.
Since you feel comfortable with subtractive synthesis, you are probably ready for the G2. But recognize that the complex stuff takes a while to understand, let alone master. |

Hey Merlot, Welcome
Like Mosc said download the G2 demo and give it a try.
It is much more than the virus especially with all those 8 bincounters, compfilters, flipflops and all goodies (not on VC). I think most people really understand substractive or any synthesis is when they patch the modulars. The people here are very helpful, lot of patches to experiment, lot of tutorials by pros. I started with VC and jumped to G2, it was tough for me in the begining and now I'm getting the hang of it(I think). |

thanks for the info. I would try the demo, but I am on a Mac I am going to go up to the music store and play with one and check it out. I also decided to wait and see what comes out of NAMM.
How is the G2 as a controller. Can you patch it up to control software synths and such? |

Yes you can do that, it even has some support to get the rotaries synced with external gear.

| My first synth was the micromodular, so the 1st generation Nord Modular (small and cheapest version). Thanks to the machine and most of all the community, I learned a lot about all kinds of synthesis. I now have a G2 engine, and still feel quite a newbie regarding synthesis, but I can only recommend it. Whatever (stupid) questions I have, there are always kind and knowledgeable people around here that will answer them. |

Everyone here has once been in your position, some still are. But as you can see on this forum there is a strong community that is quite willing to help each other. And even the most proficient G2 patchers learn something new every day. So, if you take the plunge you're not alone. |

There are more powerfull synths and there are synths that are easier to use, however, I don´t think there are synths that are better suited to learning about synthesis or have a better ballance between power and ease of use.
Somewhere in my "archives" there are still a pair of OS 1 floppies for the G1, my rack was my first synth, it used to go directly into a hifi set. I tought myself basically anything in synthesis I could get my greedy little hands on (didn´t even know about substractive synths back then). The pro is that once you get a N.M. down you´ll be in business and everything else will come easy, the con is that almost all other hardware synths will lose their apeal.
Go for it, you won´t look back. _________________ Kassen |
