There where not only paparazzis there. I got a invitation to the swedish annual Norberg festival also. That was the main benefit, and it was only because of my tee shirt

ill come down soon!
would have come down today but it was so wet and cold
i made everything in these boxes apart from cast the metal parts
the plates are motm sized blanks with a plastic coating showing decals
box is tasmanian oak with maple stain
brass handle was found out in an op shop out in the country.. got a whole bag of em
it has a nice steel plate bottom and rubber stoppers
i think its a nice box, its the first real wood work ive done since high school (10 years :/) so im pleased with result. next step is going to be to make some nice metal boxes using all the new metal work tools in our workshop _________________ problemchild

This old girl is just back from her 25 yearly service and still going strong.
Just been fully refurbed and strobe tuned by one of the best.
(Good enough for Mr Zimmer is good enough for me).
Loving that 80's Curtis sound.

from matrix synth:
The red controller on the bottom is the Haken Continuum. I found more info on patcharena.com (check it out for a better image): "Mysterious unnamed super synth at the Hakken Audio Booth! I'll try and find out more about this unique synthesizer today. The inventor mentioned that he was inspired by neural networks. Note that those blue pads above the rotary knobs are touch sensitive as well. Every section is unique and will exhibit different behavior based on what it's connected to. You can find the creator's website with more photos here"
Update via adam s in the comments: "It's a custom instrument by Skot Wiedmann.

Thanks, it's a Digisound 80 system, designed by Charles Blakey of Blackpool England in the 70's using cem chips throughout.
Restored by KSR in England. |

Big Trouble Subject description: little packages of dynamite |

When some guests moved in it occurred to me to grab a chunk of the Tower of Power and stuff it in a 100PS Doepfer case and move it into our temporary living space. Turned out so nice I thought I should share it with enthusiasts who might be equally curious how much fun you can stuff into a limited space. I think one of the secrets of this satisfying trick was having an SH-101 right there with it, offering a unique, strong voice and sequencer features that sync with the A-155. Seriously, if a 2 space case is your restriction, I think these modules come close to maximizing it. The Doepfer sequencer has great trigger features. The ASol VCO ring mod oscillator has been a favorite with perfect tracking from the SH-101. LFO-NZ module is a little difficult due to banana jacks, but they dont come that way, and the noise and attenuators make it great in tight spaces. The 109 I have isnt 100% but it was better than other filter/vca combos I tried in its place. The dual ring mod was superfluous, it needs a double S&H instead. Im telling ya, these modules bang for the buck and the size like mad. Shame to put the Tower back in order and disable this particular assemblage. Sorry, no audio proof of this pudding, but my smile is stuck over this one!

Here's my little setup.. more eclectic than some, certainly less impressive than others.
The Lunetta (as noted on the pic) was made by electro-music member RF. It is incredible and I owe a debt of gratitude to him for parting with it. I took this pic today because it's the first day I have all my stuff interfacing fully. Thanks for lookin, comments welcome.

Hi. Just have to share my Digisound 80 with you. I have had this since 1991, plus have about 8 more modules in a box looking for space for them to go.
Great sound and Excellent reliability, still in use today. Look on youtube to see vids of it running.
By the way i live in Blackpool and have bought stuff of them when they were in Queens St in Blackpool.

Great vids there Tron, very nice to see that a few Digi's are still doing their stuff. I have had my system a long time also, I remember writing to Mr Blakey as a lad, what a helpful bloke. If I had lived in Blackpool he wouldn't have had a minutes peace
Very nice keyboard with joystick also, I would like to see your synth with all the modules installed. |

The control panel on my Aries Synth Subject description: Some people have asked about this |
 |
|
From time to time I am asked about the green pushbuttons on my Aries Synth.
My Aries modular consists of stock Aries Modules built into a homemade cabinet (my system outgrew the stock 11-module cases).
When I upgraded the Aries to nine VCOs, it became apparent that I would need a LOT of patch cords just to support the routine patching of control voltages and gate/triggers from the keyboards to the VCOs. Additionally, the synth has two VCFs and a Phaser/Flanger that would often track along with the VCOs. The solution to this situation was the green buttons.
For each VCO, VCF, and Phaser, up to six CV's can be summed via columns 1 thru 6. The columns are normalled to the two keyboards, the sequencer, and pitch follower and are labeled 'a' through 'f'.
Column 'g' (the 7th column) is for routing sync signals to VCO's 1 through 9. Since the bottom three rows are unused (no sync inputs for filters), I placed some useful sync sources on the bottom three buttons. For example, VCO 1 can be the master VCO and all the others can be slaved to it.
Column 'h' (the 8th column) is for Pulse Width Modulation. Again, rows one through 9 correspond to the VCO's. The three leftover buttons are used to select two convenient CV sources for PWM and the the third button from the bottom routes the CV through floating attenuator 'a'.
Columns 'h' and 'i' route Gate and Trigger signals to the envelope generators 1 through 6 (the panel is mislabeled -- originally I only had four EG's and routed the signals elsewhere). The top half is normalled to Keyboard 1 and the bottom normalled to Keyboard 2.
You will notice on the control panel picture a section labeled "Interface". These inputs are overrides for each column, a through h. g and h override the Gate/Trigger from Keyboard 1 while the two unlabeled inputs to the right of g and h override that Gate/Trigger from Keyboard 2.
The overrides are very powerful because they allow me to route CVs from the MIDI-to-CV converter and external devices (such as my theremins). Unused columns can be overridden with CV's from LFO's and other sources.
The bottom three rows on the interface correspond to the MIDI-to-CV converter. The eight connections labeled "A3340S" correspond to the eight CV outputs from the MIDI-to_CV converter (again, some old labels that I haven't changed).
The "Threshold select" switches are for the Foot Pedals a through d. When the switch is in the "upper" position, then the front-panel foot pedal pot controls the max setting of the pedal. When in the "lower" position, then the foot pedal pot (on the panel) controls the min level setting.
I uploaded large pictures -- you can click on the pics and get a larger, more detailed view.
Last night I calibrated everything -- it had been quite a few years since I'd gone through and done a detailed calibration. The VCO's still track beautifully -- a real testament to the quality of the Aries equipment.

Thanks for the reply frac.
I went on an electronics course in 1991 here in Blackpool and i happened to mention to the teacher i was interested in synths and he said he had a box of synth bits for sale.
As it turned out he worked at the digisound works here in Blackpool on
Queens st.
When i went to his house for a look it was like opening a treasure chest. To him it was just "getting in the way". To me it was like getting my own moog modular.
I bought 16 modules + powers supplies and some paperwork for £50.
The teacher was called was Simon Bailey, he's done some designing and building of modules.
The keyboard and controller i was lucky enough to get hold of not so long ago. Until then i was using a Casio CZ101 and Kenton Pro 1 as a controller.
There must be a few of these still working because they seem so Bomb Proof. |
