Prospective G2 buyer. |
|
|
Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchsing a G2 and have got the editor, patches, and manual and all the mp3 files from the website. After looking thruogh the patches and manual and checking out the mp3's I was wondering, apart from the traditional 'analogue' type synthesis, and FM is it possible to do other types with it.The reason i'm asking is that I've already got a Waldorf Q Rack and a Novation Supernova.I'm particularly interested in granular synthesis and as I'm on a massive downer on the 'computers in the studio' I'd rather not get a PC or MAC with Reaktor.
Regards,
M.A.

Welcome M.A., to the forum !
When your main interest is into granular synthesis maybe the G2 would not be the first choice. But it can do some granular processing. Rob Hordijk made a patch to demonstrate this ( see : http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-2718.html&highlight=granular )
This however a rather complicated patch and it's hard to estimate the capabilities of it by just looking ... an mp3 would help I guess ... anyone ?

I would agree, the G2 isn't the best solution for granular synthesis. Unfortunately, this generally a sample playback type of synthesis and this has become software based in recent years. Still, since it requires only very short samples, maybe the G2 is good enough. _________________ --Howard

I pretty much exclusively use the Nord G2 and Reaktor 4 these days, so I feel obligated to throw in my 2 cents. Granted, the G2 does have some granular/resynthesis capability, but the complexity and diversity of this seems limited to me. With Reaktor you can utilize and tweak a variety of granular resynthesis techniques fairly quickly ( with just a few modules). I can understand why you'd be against computers in the studio, but maybe a laptop with Reaktor could change your mind if granular is the technique you really want to play with. Also, you would not need the fastest newest computer for it...you can get away with a machine that meets the minimum requirements of Reaktor, but loading multiple, large instruments to use simultaneously would not be possible. However, I think you'd probably get the sounds you're after without running into this problem. |

Cool track, Zynth. Maybe the G2 is a pretty useable granular synth after all. _________________ --Howard

I think the G2 is actually pretty useable as a granular synth, but the type of granular "sound" is a bit different...Reaktor's granular modules (without added filters and other gadgets) typically have a gritty kind of granular sound (truncation?) thats kind of popular amongst the laptopers right now...Robs patch is "warmer" (I'm at a lack of better description), I personally like it better. perhaps I will have to do an experiment in a bit to see if I can get the grittier sounds on the G2 as well. |

Thanks zynthetix for posting the mp3. In my ears it does right to the patch, but Rob would be the the person to decide I guess.
