Speaking of automation. I use Sonar with a MotorMix. This is a pretty good way of getting the best of both worlds. Sonar doesn't use the MotorMix as well as it could, but it's not half bad, or better said maybe, it better than half good. |

As most of my stuff is synths/sampler controlled by midi, I can adjust volume however I want in midi.
If I need to go nuts with something I can record it and mutate that track once it hits sonar.
The only thing I'd like to see is a complete wipe of all console settings (EQ, fx sends, ect) or complete saves of projects. That would be cool. But I'm more into the creative process of resetting the console when I open an old project. Not hearing the track how it was when I left it will often give me new ideas to go forward with. the way I figure it, if I didn't finish it the first time then I must have run out of ideas. Starting with a clean console forces me to mix everything again which more often then not triggers new ideas.
So I'll avoid something that can save entire project setting for the time being. |

it's not a matter of how many things you own but if you know how to squeeze creativity from what you got

Well said!!!!
OK, Carlo, tell me; you use Logic, I know what that does. It's pretty close to Sonar. If you use Logic, what do you need Live for? What functions are unique to it? |

as the name implies, Live has been built to be used as an instrument that you play "live". It does not necessarily have a linear approach to recording:
| Ableton wrote: | What is Live?
Live 3 is the real-time audio production solution that eliminates the
boundaries between composition, performance, recording and sound
design.
Combine loops, phrases, complete songs and audio recordings of any tempo in a single Live Set.
Experiment with sound files in the uniquely interactive and nonlinear Session View.
Capture every detail of your nonlinear experiments as a linear arrangement that can be edited to perfection in the Arrangement View.
Modify grooves and correct timing using Warp Markers.
Modulate pitch, timing, volume and effect parameters for individual notes or parts of a sound file using Clip Envelopes.
Use any of the 17 acclaimed built-in effects and have access to endless expansion via VST Plug-in support.
Gain unprecedented real-time control by assigning all mixer, transport and effects parameters to computer keys and MIDI.
Record multi-track audio at 24-bit/192kHz.
Freely experiment and try new ideas with Live's non-destructive editing and sample manipulation, including unlimited Undo/Redo.
Run Live in Mac OS 9, Mac OS X or Windows.
Seamlessly integrate Live with your favorite ReWire-compatible applications as either a ReWire master or slave |

Well I finally got a digital camera (that I don't know how to use very well yet) so here's a dark, fuzzy picture of my setup:
and the cube that does most of the work:
and of course all artists must have at least one other mammal around:

The cat has a profound look on its face. Sorta like "this human is sad. He needs all this shit to be happy."
The setup looks very nice. That table can probably a ton of stuff. _________________ --Howard

Hey, Ponk. Do you get enough stereo separation with the speakers pointed at each other like that? What kind of effect are you getting with that arrangement? _________________ --Howard

No, it does NOT sound good. It's hard to say anything about the stereo separation, because it hisses and buzzes so much that almost nothing else gets recorded. And yes, it is a mic in the middle... well, kind of, it isn't meant for recording any kind of instrument, but it's the only one we got We get a ture evil black metal effect from it (I've been toying with the idea of recording a black metal album with an answering machine ) We are using this set up for recording some extreme lo-fi guitar&bass noise... |

Hey,
if this is turning into a "show me yours, and I'll show you mine" thread kinda thing...
Here's my setup:
Three wetsuits and a humble repository of gear.

PS. the MicroModular is blatantly absent, picture the little red devil somewhere at 3 o'clock to the mixing desk. _________________ :wq |

I like this thread, it's so good to see I'm not the only one who seems to be fighting a constant battle with my studio. My main problem is lack of space, too much gear and not enough time, shouldn't complain though

OMG I am so jealous of you guys...
I feel like a really small fish, hopelessly lost in a tankful of hardware sharks...
No photo from me (it's really not worth it), just a list:
Hardware:
P4 3Mhz PC, 512 Mb RAM (onboard soundchip - ugh)
Roland E-16 (used for MIDI control only)
Software:
Ableton Live!
Sonar
FLStudio
Absynth
FM7
100s more VST synths & fx
Nearly all my stuff was free, either given to me by kind benefactors or found on streetcorners, or in second-hand stores. All in all (with the exception of 1 or 2 software packages) my entire setup cost me around $100.
Still, my first big expenditure is on it's way: I wanted a Novation X-Station (the small 2 octave version), but then I found an almost exact copy of it in the form of a MIDI controller for about half the price (also from Novation)...so that is no1 on my shoppping list! _________________
