Mosc was the first to see my new studio setup (although the Ion was not here yet) when he was here a few weeks ago. This is after months of planning and work to get both the room and equipment sorted out.

Here is a preview:

More pictures can be found here:
http://www.sayersweb.com/studio/html/pictures_current_studio.html

The studio is in an "unfinished" area of my basement. It has no proper wall panels, ceiling panels, or flooring. The walls are cement with insulation attached, so no wood framing to attach proper walls to.

Recent changes include addition of insulation to the ceiling, cloth to cover the ceiling and walls, carpeting, new lighting, new electrical supply panel, a new window.... An unexpected benefit of this is a very soundproof room with no sound echo problems.

While I was doing all of this stuff Mary Beth decided I needed new furniture to get better organized. Off to Ikea we went and now have several new cabinets and shelves.

The 5 old bookcases are now in the storage area located behind the "sun curtain" that you can see in the bottom picture of the "Current Studio Pictures" page. This is where all of the ugly stuff goes. The new shelves and cabinets are mostly empty, allowing plenty of room to grow.

The new lighting (also from Ikea) hangs between two wires that are parallel to the ceiling. The individual lights can be aimed in any direction which makes it great to light up the work surfaces in the room (including the mixers and synth panels). There are two sets of them and they are on a dimmer. You can get an idea what they look like from the pictures.

You can also see the new Andromeda and Ion synths in the pictures. There is much less gear in the studio these days, but I find what is there to be much more useful. Cool

some of your studios look nuts...

right now im using a pc, a yamaha synth, creative audigy platinum ex, and a korg ea-1...

my pc is a athlonXP2200+ ( overclocked to 1.9 ghrz), 512mb, creative audigy LIVE!, 44gig hdd, +6 gig hdd (used for projects), cdrw , dvdROM, also some neons \m/

yeah an amp in there.. woot!

in the summer me and a friend are setting up a studio though.. korg triton le, nova II, Boss SP505, another comp, audigy 2, plus other gear soon to be accumulated...

you will find a popular philosophy around here....it is not about how much or what gear you have, but if you can use what you have creatively. Wink

Definitely... I love talking about gear and seeing how people arrange their studio's - how they hook stuff up and use it. I've learned a ton of different ways to use things in this forum and others like it. But, it's all about what someone does with the gear, whether it's a laptop only studio or a fantastic setup with 30 synths... Smile

Speaking of new gear - in January I swapped out my Mackie 1402 mixer for a 1604. Wow - what a lovely thing that is. I love the additional aux sends which was my primary reason for wanting it.

I've also rearranged significantly - and finally used my old 80's era IBM server cabinet to store my rack gear and mixer in. Pictures soon!

If you can make a site for yourself and get at least 30 hits (per week?) you should try www.savefile.com/hosting

They are free, and have very few limitations...also, the administrator/owner is a hands-on guy who helps you out if need be via instant messenger!

Looks like a black light... I love some of the bizarre case mods that have been done. Sort of like the tricked out ridiculous looking (whoops - did I say that) cars that people have built. Of course - I'm sure they'd make fun of (and mutually respect) my hobbies just as much.

well actually it's a pretty mainstream and conservative new case from antec but it it taunted as the best case money can buy by a lot of folks.

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=81600

or a nice review:

http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20040607/miditower-02.html#antec_p160_lightweight_at_13_pounds

*EDIT* LOL, it occurs to me that I probably wasn't supposed to be drooling over computer cases in these studio shots but over keyboards and synths, right?

Well, I finally pulled out the camera today. Here's my personal space, which I lovingly call the "grotto", since it's sub-terrainian with no windows. The desk is cheap clearance office furnature, that I modified to accept a better keyboard than it was meant for Smile The walls are all coated, double-doored entry, and double-pane glass to the rest of the basement/studio. On the desk are a few projects I'm working on...midi hand drums, a modified Peavey StudioMix controller, and my own "virtual" granular synth.

All righty, you guys tempted me.

I'm not posting hardware shots because I made the decision some years ago to reduce my hardware to the bare minimum and do everything in (custom) software in SuperCollider. So you get a screenshot of my working/performing environment. Clockwise from top left:

- post window (shows command output)
- GUI with parameters for a simple chorus (someone else did the code for this gui)
- tucked in overlapping the chorus panel is a code window with some tests for a new piece
- the main control panel: storage for MIDI note data, compositional processes mapped to MIDI keys (green means it's playing), synthesis status panel, an object browser, and control bays for MIDI-mappable parameters
- bottom left: drag-and-drop mixing board (MIDI controlled)
- EQ editor
- scratch code window

It took me a good 3 years to get my workflow sorted out to this point. I'm quite proud of it.

Not much is loaded into the windows here because I'm starting on a new piece. In a performance the mini keyboard with process names is pretty much full.

Wish you could hear what it was doing at the time... a granular wash of live-recorded flute sounds Twisted Evil

James

Here's my setup:

The two front video monitors are dedicated to the SONAR DAW, the third is KVM'd to the DAW and two computers used for soft synths. That's not worked out completely satisfactorily and if I had room I add another ASCI keyboard and take the DAW off the KVM
