Hey Tom,
Sorry, made my last message before I saw your schemo.
I'm pretty sure this will work okay. The impedance of the non-inverting input on an 074 (or just about any FET input op amp) is pretty high, so you shouldn't be pulling too much current off the Mankato. You can also experiment with a higher value current-limiting resistor. Try 2K or even 4.7K and see if you still get nice status lights.
The biggest test would be to run this for a while at a high frequency and make sure that the Mankato's ICs don't get hot. ICs 1 and 3 (the 074s) are the output buffers. They may be a bit warm (should be just barely noticeable) but hot means that too much current is being pulled.
Thanks for sharing. Now we need a YouTube video with blinky lights and multi-modulation going on

Hey thanks Tim - thats some good advice, especially the 'trying-it-fast' - > I'll have a go with that.
But, yeah, I figured the opamp input impedence would be high, thus suitable. Well, actually, the initial idea came off a Grenader circuit from his old site -- but then his idea didn't seem to work out when bread-boarding, but a bit of swapping and I came up with this simple way..
I oughta check the current draw too.. They're not hi-effic LEDs unfortunately.. And, hey, the flash a bit when passing audio through - and did a quick bit of feedback cross-routing and got them flashing a-rhythmic crazy!
Tomorrow I will play (gotta practice) and will try to do some YouTubes too.. Mmm, flashing lights.
(making a touch-controller / wierdy modulation router tomorrow that'll also be benefiting from these bi-directional leds) _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

Hey Del,
Yeah, a whole new batch of Mankato PCBs are on their way as we speak. I ordered a pretty big batch, and there are still over a dozen left 'unreserved.' I'll have to order another batch before too long I think
I did make a few changes to this new batch, so I guess we'll call them Rev03s. I moved the silkscreen legends on the output connectors so they're easier to see when the connectors are installed, and I turned the output connectors around so the orientation is consistent (like the DotCom layout). None of this will matter if you don't use the .100 MTA connectors or you wire directly to the board (the proper connector wiring is shown in the documentation for each board). Electrically, the Rev02 and Rev03 boards are exactly the same.
Anyway, yes, there's a few left out of the next shipment. We take PayPal at magsmoke@gmail.com Thanks!

Thanks! glad you like them. I put a lot of effort into making the layout clean (ALWAYS lay down the power tracks first, then all the other stuff), and using nice thick tracks. I'm also diggin' the legibility of the white silkscreen on the blue soldermask. Hopefully you'll like the finished product just as much
BTW, we ordered a big batch of boards this month (due to arrive in about a week) and they're sold out already! We have to order ANOTHER batch and hopefully we'll have these in stock around the beginning of August. If you've placed an order early enough to get in on the "July" batch, you should have received an email from Magic Smoke confirming this. If you have questions, shout out to John or myself at MSE.
What's next? AS21C and a 566 VCO PCB to go along with Thomas' 566 book and some other stuff.
Thanks again to everyone!

Sorry, I got carried away with our acronyms. "AS21C" is the term we're using for Thomas' new book "An Analog Synthesizer for the 21st Century." That'll be out this month.

Oh yeah, I'm already working on an AS21C LFO PCB. (you'd think I was making alphabet soup)
Anyway, yes, we're working on the PCBs, although those won't be ready when the book premiers later this month!

Hi Steven and everybody else!
We've been shipping Mankato PCBs, and all of the boards in the current batch will be shipped by this weekend. If you've received a confirmation that you got in on the current batch of boards, you should get your board(s) within a week or so. The next batch of boards is on the way, so we'll send a confirmation for that batch soon.
Thanks to everybody who has ordered, we're approaching selling 100 boards! Please yell at us if you have any questions or want more info.

My four beautiful blue boards arrived today as well! Can't wait to start building! I have the parts list, but don't seem to be able to find the doc for the project. Did I miss a post???

Hi Everyone! Glad you like the boards. Part of the "polished" look might be the fact that I've run a protective ground plane over most of the board. It's a little extra shielding, it makes the board a bit stiffer, and it looks kinda cool too. I also like the blue color, as I feel it gives better contrast and makes the silkscreen easier to read.
Documentation for Rev03 boards goes out tonight! I've just finished checking the doc package and all customers will get an email.
Thanks again and again to everyone who has grabbed a board (or four!). More boards are on their way, and will be here next week! Also, I'll be at the Nor Cal AH meeting (Sunday, September 9th @ "21 Grand" in Oakland) with a few Mankati to play with, some TH books and some blank PCBs to sell. As always, give a shout out to magsmoke@gmail.com if you have ANY questions, problems, complaints, suggestions, donations, etc.
Cheers!

Thomas Henry,
If you are out there........
I'm also a 19" rack panel head. Have you designed a 19" rack panel for the Mankato filter? I'd be curious to see your design as I imagine others on the forum would. Gotta milk as much input before you're back to class! |

Hi tim
Is it essential to use the polystyrene caps or are there other options? I'm guessing not as they are in a critical area but if i dont have to order them it would be great as i have pretty much everything else.
cheers

Hey Brett,
Polystyrene caps are used in most VCO and VCF designs primarily because of their temperature stability. They're also very resistant to humidity, so they are very consistent over a wide range of conditions. You can use other types of caps, but the performance will suffer. Next best choice would probably be polyester, and then mylar or other "film" caps. Worst would be ceramic. Ceramic disk caps are fine for decoupling and other non-critical tasks, but shouldn't be used for frequency setting caps.
BTW, Magic Smoke is working on a purchase of tempcos and 2164 chips, so we'll be able to supply those parts soon!
Happy soldering!
