What does taxing the rich have to do with nanny-state?(seems making 300k in the US is "rich" now...)
I am talking about the .gov placing more and more rules, regulations and baby-sitting those people who don't even try.

I am NOT rich- not even close- in fact, my wife was "downsized" with everyone else. She is doing her absolute best to find a job to get back to work. It sickitates me to see people just cashing in on our system and sitting back and say "tax the rich" to feed their laziness. If you actually make an attempt to succeed- this is the best country to do it. But now, who wants to succeed- it just gets taken away anyway.

I am not trying to be a sour grape- just every year my takehome goes DOWN for a new tax, fee, assessment to be re-distributed.

Inventor- I know defense is huge- my argument was the amount of people that dont even try, and that leech the system.

Geek by trade. Military by choice.

Yes, I'd call someone making 300k a wealthy, or "rich" person.

Perhaps you do not realize that the politicians who share your viewpoints are the very same politicians who have shifted the tax burden on the middle class. They are also the same politicians who destroyed the economy with deficit spending for the military, resulting in the loss of your wife's job.

Take a look at the attached historical plot of deficit increases. The plot shows that Democrats have actually acted to reduce the growth of the national debt, while Republicans have been the ones who jacked it up. People tend to believe that Democrats are the big spenders, when in fact the opposite is the truth.

You are backing your antagonizers, cleatus.

That Pie chart is quite alarming, but I suppose it is easy to justify the widening gap between rich and poor in America by the fact that America is making the world a safer place through its military.

Yea right!

Then again most Americans would have me down as a Commie Pinko for my left of center thinking in that we cannot remove a social state just because a small percentage would abuse it.

I agree - I'm sick of the nanny state mode of thinking.

Quote:
The wealth of the very rich is never the product of free enterprise and the free market alone but comes by operating within and exploiting a network of government supports, such as licenses, regulations, subsidies, and contracts. It is the product of a sort of giveaway. Consequently, to reduce the taxes on wealth (estate taxes) or on the income from wealth (capital-gains taxes), when that wealth has been acquired with one or another kind of government support, is in effect to give the wealth holder an additional give-away. Again, there is nothing authentically conservative about this process.

From "The Rich Get Richer" by James Kurth in American Conservative magazine.

Quote:

June 13, 2008

The BBC reported startling economic equality figures in a recent documentary: the top 200 wealthiest people in the world control more wealth than the bottom 4 billion. But what is more striking to many is a close look at the economic inequality in the homeland of the "American Dream." The United States is the most economically stratified society in the western world. As THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reported, a recent study found that the top .01% or 14,000 American families hold 22.2% of wealth — the bottom 90%, or over 133 million families, just 4% of the nation's wealth.

of course I meant the magic 300k FAMILY income...
Or is it 250k now....
What will it be next week...

Honesly- I will never make that kind of $$$- I still feel 99% of them have earned it, one way or another, and its not our right to take it when we feel needy.

Generally speaking those making 300k+ went to college+ and worked their asses off to get that kind of cake...like doctors, lawyers, CEO's and such. What kinds of motivation am i gong to excel/work hard if you keep taking it all away...why not quit and just go on the dole like everyone else?
(oh shoot, I said CEO- might as well say the Devil...)

Does your chart show THIS year----just noticed we topped 1 trillion... hope and change baby.

(i am TRYING to keep this not-political as possible Wink )

I guess on the face of it it would be...unless you hold to the purpose of the Federal Gov. as specified in the constitution or in the writings of the founding fathers.

If you do that, it would seem that the relative size of the defense budget wouldn't be out of line, and there are lots of things in that chart that should be taken care of by the individual States...if at all.

I guess it's still alarming... Shocked But, for what it's worth...

Here's a quote from Alexander Hamilton from the Federalist Papers #23 re: the purpose of the Federal Gov't.

"The principal purposes to be answered by union are these the common defense of the members; the preservation of the public peace as well against internal convulsions as external attacks; the regulation of commerce with other nations and between the States; the superintendence of our intercourse, political and commercial, with foreign countries."

I'm probably an idiot to wade in to this - I don't really know enough about the Constitution to wage an effective argument....

I haven't quite figured out why it is that the Republicans can get away with pushing economic policies that hurt the poor, and the poor just can't stop climbing all over themselves to support the Republicans!

Well, actually I think part of it is that a whole lot of people basically choose between voting their prejudices or voting their hunger. In 2000 and 2004 people thought they could vote their prejudices -- anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant -- just enough to give the GOP a 50.001% "mandate" to trample the Constitution and let the bankers drive the country into the ground. In 2008 -- people are hungry and feel like a change in economic policy will mean more to their families' bottom line than hating the gays just that little bit extra.

I really fear that the economic cycle in the next century will be: Republicans wreck the economy, until people can't stand it anymore and vote in the Democrats to clean the mess up. Then, when people think they can afford to let the GOP toss them some more bloodsoaked red meat, they vote R and they get to wreck things again for the next few years.

James

The 1 trillion dollar mark was set in 2008. See this article for details:

Apologies if this gets double-posted: I tried once but it stuck on "contacting..."

An antidote, if I may... Glenn Beck making a total ass of himself on the radio.

ChucK away! Or SuperCollider or whatever your axe is. These samples are so good, it might be worth an electro-music mini-album. When he starts shrieking in the forcibly-sodomized register, I just wanna go all RDJ over that.

Unfortunately I can't do anything with this for the next 2 months until my next piece is finished, but maybe someone else wants to have some fun with it.

What other research do you consider is bad? Pharmaceuticals? GM? Nuclear energy? These are some of the few things the British are really good at, but have a really bad image. We are frankly FUCKED without investment in these technologies.
