I just got excited about that myself.
They have 12.5mm on up to 1000mm!
Woohoo!

p.

1. )Scott, what you think about those different leghts of the ribbon controllers,
you use 500mm as far i know.
do you think 750mm or 1000mm makes sense ? respectivly do you see drawbacks ?
your work on the videos were allways very musical, so i weight your thinking very high, even if it would be only speculation.

those longones are not cheap, but would fit in front of my Modularsynth which has 100cm width racks, respectivly onto my masterkeyboard.
It's clear, long ones are less fiddly and more precise, but short ones faster and better for chaotic stuff i guess.
i anyway will build 2 appendages, so i could make a long and a short one

2. next thing,
do you think it would be a good idea to playe two ribbons for two appendages directly side by side ?
I imagine it could be funny in some moments

I wouldn't mind having one of those really long ribbons either. Is the total resistance spec'ed for >500mm? I mean, if they are still in the 20K range, there's no reason why one wouldn't work. Greater than that would be untested at this point.

I certainly could use two side-by-side - I plan to, eventually. Very Happy

Cheerios,
Scott

Very Happy

Hehehe! I just finished to solder all the components at the PCB.
Front panel is decided and I'm starting to design it. Ill try it in a 1U rack.

Just posting to say that the documentation is excellent, step by step, draws with the components located -Thanks!- you save a lot of time...
Reading, you learn about the appendage but also electronics.
Scott has the talent to explain complex thinks in a pleasant, readable and easy way.
The State Machine's PCB is excellent also... super compact, all types of power supply connectors, test points...
The complete kit is impeccable.
Seems all thought for make the building easy.

Thanks to the Appendage Team. A team? Laughing

Oscar.

Sound,

Hey, that was a quick build. Glad you like the kit and documentation. Very Happy Scott did a REALLY great job with this publication. We rung it out good by using it to build the prototype boards which is really the best way to proof a document IMOP.

A 1U rack, sounds nice and would love to see the finished panel when your done designing and fabricating it.

What are your plans for the ribbon assembly?

Good luck with the rest of the build Wink

Bill

Hello Bill,

I have no idea for the ribbon assembly, so I will put it over the table or maybe I glue it- without use its adhesive- over a thin wood.
Now I like to prototype all my projects in order that with the use, understand really my needs and make the definitive design, according it. So lets see.

What I will order is a 5 cm ribbon -so I will have a switch ribbon length selector in the front panel- for see how it works for control parameters like the amplitude.
If I like it, maybe I build a second simple appendage with only the parts of the circuit needed for a simple CV output and gate generator. In order to play both appendages simultaneously. This is just an idea still for develop.
But first I want to see what I can do with all the voltage outputs.

Regards!

Is the softpot by itself pressure sensitive? Or is it just on/off and position-based?

Well, think of it as a standard potentiometer but instead of controlling the wiper position with a knob, you control the position of the wiper with your finger. The one difference is that once the finger is removed (pressure), the wiper is then isolated from the resistance material and thus "floats". On a standard potentiometer, the wiper is always contacting the resistance material so there will always be some output.

This will explain things in more detail for you:

Wow, what a great read. So I understand I may be a bit late to the party, but I was researching stuff for a DIY ribbon controller an found this.

Primarily all I'd like to do is get an S&H going to hold the notes. The gate will be supplies by a another FSR underneath the softpot. I've read through your schematics (I'm a newb) and am trying to figure out how to get this done. I don't really want (have the ability) for all the Appendage bells and whistles.

From the looks of it I could get away with what you call the "Slide S&H". Would the guard S&H be needed as well? Essentially a track and hold would be key, yet still worried a bit about 'bounce'.

Lemme know if you can help...thx./
