Comb filter?
Depending on Vactrol type?
I'm not sure people understand what you are wondering about. Could you explain? |

hi,listen to the plan-B LPG videos linked on there site.
depending on the type of vactrol u can recreate that comb filter resonance effect.Great to synthesize tablas for example.
the wiard LPG's does not sound like that and when i hear the demo vids of this project with the vactrols used its also not possible it seems (am sure).
so if u want to sound like Morton Subotnic u need the right vactrols
so i would like to know the type i do need to obtain that sound.
thank u |

What do you mean by a "comb filter resonance effect", and how would you get a comb filter out of an analogue filter with only a couple of poles?
I hear the sound changing as the camera is moved in the room, and the delayed sounds from loudspeakers & wall reflections make ordinary "comb-filter like" acoustics. Maybe this is what you mean? |

| I kind of get what TekniK is getting at - by "comb filter" he means the karplus-strong-pluck type effect you can get by turning up the resonance on a comb filter and feeding a transient sound into it. On a vactrol LPG you get a similar effect by feeding a sustaining sound through it and hitting it with a transient CV. Either way, the efffect is somewhat like a finger plucking a string. The Plan B LPG does do this effect very well. I don't know what the actual answer to the question is, mind. |

i think a fast vactrol would work for trigger pulses. _________________

I used to think the slower the vactrol the better for those plucky sounds. Could be wrong or a matter of taste.
However, the Borg 2 has very fast vatrols and can do plucky sounds but I thought my Fonik LPG better in this regard. Unfortunately by now I've killed my Fonik LPG so I've no chance to do a direct comparison at this moment. |

It may not be the vactrol that is solely responsible for the difference in sound you're descrtibing.
But you might try testing out different vactrols to see if you respond to one or the other. There's only about three different manufacturers.
I've used a couple (2) different vactrols in this circuit and did not notice any dramatic difference. |

Ah, I see. The pluckiness i definitely related to the slew of the Vactrols compared to "ordinary" filter components, and it's probably the most distinctive character of the Lowpass Gate.
I guess the answer to the question is that one should choose the same Vactrol type as in product X to have a pluckiness like product X. But I don't know which non-Buchla product uses what Vactrol. |

Hi Norman,
Exactly,i could not have discribe it better!
(note: i just noticed that the demo vid on PlanB has been removed, there where 2 vids, now only one,and u don't hear the effect in this one ,u can here it better in the cynthia demo's but not 'deep' enough to)
i found a picture of the Plan-B PCb here, but cannot read the vactrol type
I have been told that te Model 13 that has that comb caracteristic let pass thru a bit audio, the borg closes very well and also this project as i can hear in the vids. |

Boards Have Arrived - See PICS |
 |
|
Hi gang,
The PCB's arrived today. I am currently sorting them per the orders and making up shipping labels for each. I will ship them in two batches (USA Domestic & International). There are around 100 orders so it will likely take the full week I anticipated to get them packaged and out in the post. Stay with me, your order will ship by next Monday at the latest. My wife will help me write the customs slips for the International ones to speed the process. Boy, the post office is going to loath my arrival with all these little packages to weight and process (HA!).
See below for the PCB pictures. The silk screen and solder mask came out great. The RoHS Lead-Free process means they are whitish instead of silver like tin/lead boards... and I tested them to make sure the finish solders easily and it does. The spacing for pots came out very nicely if I do say so myself and is fully compatible with Spectrol/Vishay 148/149, 248/249, Alpha 16mm PCB type pots and Bourns 91 series among many others. Enjoy the pics folks! Shipping emails will come soon!
Thomas

hi thomas, customs forms shouldn't be necessary so long as your envelopes are less than 8 oz.s and you say they have 'no commercial value'. i made about a dozen trips to my post office and have gotten to know just about everyone there by now.. yeah they'll love you.
nice project btw

As someone who ships a lot from my own online store, I feel your pain! Thanks so much again for this, and I look forward to receiving my boards!

Saturday "Post Shipping" update:
I just got back from the post office. A kind lady named "Joulee" helped me to ship 112 packages total over the course of 1 hour. All orders have been filled and processed. Please email me when your order arrives. All International should take 5-10 business days to get to you.
I will make sure to update the PCB layout on the docs packet this weekend. All the parts are the same, but the traces got switched around a bit for the resonance pot. I can't wait to see the various builds people put together from this!
