It turns out that I had some old component values and a couple more things to sort out with this "prototype" board I got. I've tracked it all down and sorted it out. I definately feel like I'm learning more and more as things progress.
I've got to get some modulation sources happening!

It looks really nice! I'm in the middle of building an ASM-2 Wizard myself and it's a lot of fun. |

Hello to everybody!
I found this thread so I have registered this forum and now I'm a new member. .
I want to build a modular analog synth by myself and have found the asm-2. I'm not sure whether it's the right system to start with.
I'm a beginner in DIY and I think it is more difficult to build up a system containing all modules on a single PCB than to build up single modules.
But the ASM-2 seems to be a nice system with a fair price tag.
What's about the voltage levels of the ASM-2. Is it possible to add modules from other manufactors to the system ?
Are there any sound examples online ?
greetings

I think it will be fine for patching into other modular gear. The CVs are normalised to 0 -> 10V and the signals are -5 -> +5V. I haven't finished mine yet (not far to go) so I haven't done any sound samples yet.
It is a big project, it has taken me a number of months of solid work. Single modules are good too. I like the idea of having a complete setup which I can then add extra stuff to later, if I want.
As with any DIY electro-music type project, it's the case and peripheral finishing touches which take a bit of thought and extra work. Soldering up the PCB only took a week.
Maybe start off with a WSG or SoundLab if you haven't got a lot of experience.
Oh, and welcome to electro-music.com! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Dear Uncle Krunkus ,
I think I will order a PCB and the documentation to get a besser felling what will be going on If I try to build the system.
There is the ASM-2 Wizzard for which they offer a nice front plate, this could save a lot of work I think and it looks nice also.
Anyway I am looking forward to your sound samples of the ASM-2.
Bye

You're welcome to get a copy of my "Sorcerer" front panel artwork as well, if you want it. It's kind of half way between a Genie and a Wizard. Mostly pre-patched, but with a selection of patch points across the bottom which you could configure to your own personal taste. You can find the pic of it earlier in this thread. I'd send a high res version for you to use though. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

I have ordered a soundlab kit to keep things simple in the beginning and to improve soldering knowledge.
After the hopefully success with it I will get the ASM - 2.
staying tuned..

Soldering practice is always a good thing. Like I said though, the best lesson you'll learn for your ASM2 is how you house your SoundLab, and how you finish it off. Patching options, panel artwork, controller mounting etc. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

First sample |
|

Here's the first sample of the ASM-2 Sorcerer. Standard kind of drone sound: - S&H on 2 VCOs into 2 VCFs panned L&R.
I made it by Christmas! Yeah!
I've still got the RingMod, ADSRs and the LFOs to go, but it's pretty inspiring to get this far. I've also got to do all the adjustments as well.
Sorry, the sample was lost in the crash of Aug'07 _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. Last edited by Uncle Krunkus on Mon Oct 01, 2007 4:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Sounds great.
The last ASM2 samples posted were also very nice, like a Virus demo (I mean that in a good way).
This seems to be a very good quality product. |

No,...
The Sorcerer is an ASM-2!
I've been sidelined by a fault in a Behringer Eurodesk MX 3282A. (Paying job)
So the Sorcerer will have to wait. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Hey everybody!
Just a quick update to let you all know that I'm back to doing a little bit of wiring on the Sorcerer every night. The front panel is fully dressed, and I only have the LFOs and ENVs to go for the basic wiring to be finished. (A solid day's work would do it easily. I just don't get whole days to myself anymore! )
I'll take some photos (and some samples) soon. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Very good. That is quite the LARGE project! It's really coming along. I love the panel! I look forward to the pictures UK!
"Divide and Conquer" as they say ! Doing the job in part acts will result in a higher quality electronic instrument that will last many years!
Nice work my friend

All basic wiring finished.
Front panel mostly dressed.
All modules functioning.
Now, an extensive period of testing and adjusting.

The Square Dance |

Here it is just noodling along by itself. No effects. LFOs are modulating each other and PWMs, Inverted VCF to enhance stereo effect, bit of RingMod mixed in etc.
Still haven't done any adjustments, so the levels, wave shapes and DC offsets are probably all over the place. Still, it seems to be enjoying itself. It did this for over 10 mins before accidently stalling both LFOs. Man I wish I had recorded that!

Hi jimh54,
don't hesitate to drop by and ask any questions you need answers to. Put them on this thread rather than PMing, so others can refer to them if need be.
I got one of those cases from Jaycar Electronics here in Australia, but didn't end up using it. I've gone all rack mount now. They ship OS if you can't find one nearby.
