Keep 'm coming Id say, the appendage videos, they sound like magic. Quite an expressive controller. _________________ Jan

Hi guys - it's awesome to see this thread. Especially since it was kicked-off by a discussion about my Stribe project. Anyways, I've just released a new kit through curious inventor that lets you build a single strip Stribe with 2 columns of LEDs. It's pretty simple but I think it will come in handy to a lot of the folks on this thread. Check it out:
Phineus
I really think your Stribe project is wonderful. This would come in handy for sure and have a couple of questions. Is the softpot power and 5 VDC logic supply isolated ? For example, I would like to use this Stribe 1 with the Appendage but will be biasing the softpot with either 10V or using a current source. I would like to use the 5 VDC input to power the logic so that I may send the feedback to the Stribe via the SPI bus via my own controller. If they are not isolated, is it just a simple matter of just cutting a trace between the logic supply and softpot to perform the isolation?
I would like to purchase a stribe 1 kit, when will they be available and how may I order one? I may want to use this for the prototype phase of the Appendage project.

Prototypers: we ran into a snag on one part, so the shipment to you got delayed. Bill should have hold of it shortly, then he'll send the kits out so you can go through the same experience.
Yes, Scott, thanks for posting the picture. As soon as I get the parts, kits will get shipped to the prototype team. Everything is all ready to roll
In the mean time, while I am waiting, I will buzz the circuit completely and make sure everything is going everywhere it should. So far, things look great. Thankfully.
I am also thinking it would be a good idea to use one of the "Stribe 1" kits to use with the Appendage for the prototype phase as well as using my 500 MM softpot. the AUX expansion connector could be used to read the voltages generated by the Appendage and provide feedback to the Stribes LED displays.
I wanted to change the voicing for the guitar parts on "Telstar" but I need to work on a foot pedal system. I have some ideas using a DG211 and will be working on that soon.
Scott,

And what did you make the keyboard diagram out of? What a great idea!
I used Turbocad to lay it out and then printed it on heavy card stock in two pieces to cover the full Softpot. I will take a closeup picture when I get a chance.

Very cool indeed! I'd like to make it a glossy surface for marking with those dry-erase markers; make it a sort of play-by-numbers affair.
Here's one that uses slide to control two VCOs - one is a master and one is a slave (they're synced). Bend is also controlling the slave oscillator, so a slide up will get a sync tone. The various voltages are also controlling my Triple Wilson SVVCF, one way or another. Klee provides the lurchy accompaniment.

If you search Telstar, tornadoes in Youtube, there is a video of a reformed Tornadoes a few years ago playing Telstar. The guitar solo is awful - 40 odd years later!

Scott,
The composition has an obvious middle eastern feel to it. I like the sliding melody. This could be built upon for sure adding some sweeping sound and spatial FX. The drone at the beginning, was that the Klee just hanging out on one step?
That was a great way to start my day! I love the middle eastern feel to it. It reminds a bit of a U. Srinivas and Michael Brook cd I have.
I wonder how you could replicate the feel of a hurdy gurdy?
Thanks for these videos, although the waiting is getting unbearable!

Hey Bill,
Yep - the EG controlling the Klee voice was gated, so the note was held open. The voice itself was a resonating Late MS-20 clone filter fed through a CGS wave multiplier. After I recorded it, I wished I would have actually modulated the wave multiplier to give it some life.
Aetherpulse - good question. I think if one left the VCA open on the Appendage voice, that might be a good start. I don't know enough about hurdy-gurdy's to go beyond that, though.

Appendage note index
Hey Scott,

Here are some pictures of the Appendage index that I created with TurboCad. I set out to make it 3 octaves, but ended up with 44 notes. After I printed it on the heavy card stock paper, with the laser printer, I sprayed it with some clear plastic acrylic.
It is semi-permanently attached to the wood with double stick Scotch tape. This note spacing seems pretty playable.

Tim

(Again) What an excellent idea, Tim! It's quite thoughtful how you take the steps and then point them at the ribbon at the exact spot (IE, the diagram is wide, but a thin line indicates the spot on the ribbon).
Here's one I did with the Triple State Variable filter. It was much more long-winded than what's on the video. My recorder ran out of "tape" (drive full), which it is wont to do when it's...um...full. It's always such a nice rush to work on something than see the "DRV Full" message on the D8....
Anyhoo, the best part was the beginning anyway - the filter is set fro very high resonance, and it's pretty "vocal" sounding as it is, plus the heavy blanket of reverb really made it trip out when the Appendage started popping its voltages in different proportions....

What's the ETA on the prototype builds? Does anyone know? The prototype boards came in, what, three weeks ago?
Glad your eager to build an Appendage. I have just finished packing everything I can and am just waiting on some capacitors that are needed for the build. Once I get those, I can mail the goods out. One package is going to our beloved Uncle Krunkus in Australia delivered from the states so that will be about 1 to 2 weeks right there.
I Figure 4 to 8 weeks for building and testing. maybe a bit more depending on if there are any changes to my board layout, design changes, and folks spare time. There is a fair bit of panel work so the build will be larger than the usual module. Not as big as the Klee though I anticipate things will go smooth
To make it official, the prototype team members are:
Scott Stites (from Kansis, USA)
Bill Manganaro (State Machine, from New York, USA)
Andrew Sharp (Uncle Krunkus, from Australia)
Hugh St. Amour (Ringer, from Canada)

cool, so we're still looking at about 3 months or so until we can get our grubby hands on sum pcbz. Nice to have a firmer time line set up.
Yes, also, Scott can also give us a better time line as he also has to finish up on the build documentation so I don't want to step on his toes either OR any of the other team members for that matter as they have schedules of their own as well. We will take things a day at a time.
Well of course our mothers waited 9 months for us so more time to digitise my old audio cassettes! Would you believe that my Sony Pro Walkman has developed worn head syndrome and my Denon deck - very expensive 20 years ago runs fast, so I am using a cheapo Aiwa deck which plays perfectly!

Scott,
Good to know ..... I am not crazy !! Your prototype package got sent today Scott so keep one ear to the ground ... I think you will find some other interesting stuff in there as well ..... ... I love secrets
Andy, Hugh ......... you fellas are next, just waiting on stuff. The kits are 99% filled.
Great work Bill,
Don't stress too much about my parts though, I'm sure I've got everything here, (except for the Softpot) _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there.

Thanks Andy,
OK roger that man !! I will send the package out tomorrow, along with Hugh's package also
I am at the bench now laying out all the pieces on a nice piece of white laminated piece of shelving I salvaged. Getting started on a panel deisgn and building power/signal cables.
My official moving date is on the 26th of December so it's a challenge to keep things going and move a whole house simultaneously I see it as just another challenge in life
OK then, you should see the package in two weeks tops

Hi Bill,
Thanks and great work!!!! Don't worry about the remaining parts, I probably have them as well. A mention of what they are will suffice.
Thanks Ringer ......... As it turns out, I am mailing the packages out tomorrow and the extra parts arrived from Scott this evening SO, no missing parts anymore ....... It just kills me to send incomplete kits ..... (I can't begin to describe my compulsions)
Question on this magnificent project Scott - what is the current board size and will it fit behind a Frac panel? I'm really looking forward to building this, and was thinking it would be nice if the board and patch-points were in my modular cabinet, with the softpots on a nice block of wood with little else attached.

The board is 8.5" x 4" and it should fit lengthwise behind a FRAC panel since one can fit 10 1.5" wide modules in a FRAC panel for a total length of 15". It's big but you need lots of front panel space anyway so you can mount it behind this panel. I kept the board width 4" for good reason. To fit RAC panels as well as seveal others. The FRAC standard is that each panel is 3U or (3 x 1.75")= 5.25" in height. You would have 1.25" to spare so you will be fine. Enough for top and bottom rail clearance so that your panel can be fastened to the rails.
Just a quick post to let all know that my Softpot Prototype kit turned up this morning, with all parts safe and sound!!
I'd like to take the chance to acknowledge Scott and Bill as very cool buddies of mine indeed!!! I feel honoured to be part of the prototype team for this absolutely fuckin awesome project. And humbled by the accuracy, efficiency, and generosity of Bill for putting together a kit for me! I will build it with reverence and report my findings ASAP. I will also be making a donation to electro-music.com in recognition of both your efforts.
Thank you,
Very much,
Andrew
BTW Bill's parts kits are just simply top notch! _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there.
