That is very nice Mr Bad
What is the vero add-on you have there?

Thanks David,
That is the little 4066 portamento add-on board, it means one can have portamento switched on or off for each step (with overall time controlled by the pot) a really great addition, I think Ryk posted the info earlier on in the thread...
I chose to have a toggle on each step, but I think you can 'program' it for each step if you don't have the toggles, and don't mind relinquishing a couple of features (IIRC!)

Hi Charlie,
Portamento programmable per step is a cool feature.
As I already have Julian's Euro panels (which are fantastic BTW) I may make an expander panel if I add that feature.
Thanks

I'm absolutely going to etch up some pcb's for the panel components for my others!
Thanks Ryk!

youch!
Some wires there...
Are those Davies knobs on splined shafts there? I think i was eyeing them up the other day, but didnt want to import them from the states (ive got tired of arguing with parcelfarce about the legality of their handling charges) _________________

Those are the knobs I want to use! I also love the portamento switches. I might have to add them on an auxillary panel. Then I could add accent switches too. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/nerdware/

Yes they are Davies knobs on splined shafts - I cut little bits of Burger King drinking straws to even out the shaft/add a bit of girth, though they still wobble a little (not enough to notice). They are ideal for the rotary switches.
You can get these in Europe from Banzai ( http://www.banzaieffects.com/ )
but they are a little more expensive than Smallbear (20p per knob last time I looked) which may make customs fees more attractive (as it were!).
TBH though I'm looking to stop using Banzai.

Charlie,
I was wondering why you will not be using Banzai? I ask as I have been putting an order together for a few parts that are a pain to get in the UK.
I have to ask as you went to the trouble of typing can in bold
Thanks

Hi David,
A couple of reasons really - although TBH I wouldn't want to put anyone off ordering from them.
I've had deliveries so badly packed that stuff is falling out the box, parts missing on a few occasions, wrong parts/wrong amount of parts, stuff that takes months to arrive, and pretty slack customer service (at least compared to Rapid which is instantaneous, when they've missed bits off orders, they will ship them next day end of story). Maybe the customer service thing is because of the language barrier?
I used to use them for a lot, but now don't bother unless I'm sure I can't go elsewhere.
That said, they do have a great range of obscure parts, especially knobs, potentiometers and capacitors and their 0.1% resistors can't be beat on price!

Thanks Charlie,
All good to know. That way at least I can manage my own expectations if I place an order.
And yes they do have some nice bits that are hard to source elsewhere.
Thanks again

Hello
Well done.
I like the graphics, nice lines and circles.
I notice on the back is the daughterboard, is that for the V2.1
portamento control ?
As the panel looks to be V2.0 for CV stage control.
The spaghetti is wild !
If any one is scared of the "pasta" I would advise trying the project
with 50k potentiometers instead of switches, as the wiring required is much much simpler.
The only drawback is no click-stops

Hi Ryk, I used option 2, and it is V2.0 software, so I added all the toggles along the bottom..
The wiring is not so bad, just really time consuming, I have started to design a little panel pcb to attach all the panel components, I have attached a low res version(!)
The thing is, that this is just a prototype really, so I drew all over the front with amendments, I can imagine it will now stay like that forever...
| ryktnk wrote: | Here are some details for the programmable portamento mod I have been
working on.
There are two options for this mod.
OPTION [1]...
OPTION [2]
This doesn't require new software, but you will need to add 8 1P2W switches
to the panel, and a bit more spaghetti wiring !
Option [2]
Wire up a 4066 chip on a small piece of veroboard, using the
"Portamento mod opt 2" schematic diagram.
You will need 8 1p2w toggle switches, 8 in4148 diodes, and a 1M resistor.
The switches are wired from the POT1 - POT8 connectors on the main PCB,
and to the mod board via the diodes.
The mod board is connected to the main PCB via the GRND, +5, PORT1, & PORT2
connectors.
Make sure the 4066 mod board is insulated and attach to the main PCB.

what would be great would be to 'build' the switches in eagle. the rotaries are, i think, in the database currently, but the slides are not.
i tried using pads in the right physical locations, but, very quickly, it got too much for my brain to handle.
id like to make up pcbs more for neatness than ease of construction, but i think for the 2 boards i have, the effort in laying out the pcbs is going to be far greater than just wiring by hand : ( _________________

Yes, but RYK is somewhere till middle of January and therefore he will ship PCBs after he gets back.
BTW: Slider switches are sold out. |

Thanks. I did see the slider/switch sell out thing...I'm thinking I go the pot route, rather than switches. I haven't found a supplier for either slider or rotary 1 pole 8 way switches. |

Rotaries normally come in 12way, but then have a little bent washer thing that restricts the travel. Depending on how you fit the washer, you can cut them right back to 2 position, if you like.
(obviously not all are like this, but most that you see about the place are) _________________

You can get some 1 pole 12 way switches that have a mechanism for limiting the number of ways the switch can be turned, like these:
C&K Rotary switch at Digikey
These may not be the cheapest switches, but you may be able to find something cheaper that does the same.
(Damn, Julian beat me to it while I was hunting down the part on Digikey)

Thanks, all! I didn't know about the 2 - 12 position thing. That's pretty cool.
Yeah, but I wonder what shipping to the states would cost me? I can't find find any US supplier selling them for less than $3.70 (2.89 GBP). |
